This engaging anthology will doubtless find its way to the coffee tables and bedsides of those who know and love New York, and will make a good browsing item. The editors have sought successfully to illustrate the complexity and wonder, the naughtiness and niceties, the silliness and splendor, of life in the world's First City. Many familiar names are here: E.B. White, Dorothy Parker, Henry James; yet they have searched and discovered among the unlikely, and Gorki and Chesterton are here too. To contain all of New York's nooks and crannies in under 400 pages is certainly an impossible task, but this book gets as close as many anthologies might.
