I do Maura Jacobson's crossword puzzle every week in New York magazine. Some of them are really clever, and most of them make me smile. I have all of her books, and am now waiting for the next one......... I have read that she is very well respected in the crossword puzzle society and lots of her clues elicit a groan of laughter when they are figured out. They are not difficult or ridiculous, like a lot of crossword puzzles are.

This book has a great variety of puzzles that are at various levels. I would say they range from about a 3-6 on a scale of 10 in terms of difficultness.

Bought this crossword book based on all the glowing Amazon reviews and was not as taken as other reviewers. The puzzles are large and clever, of mid-range difficulty and enjoyable. However the paper is low-grade, porous newsprint that bleeds/shows through and there are only 50 puzzles. With one puzzle per page in this oversized floppy book, that's 25 sheets of thin newsprint (a puzzle on each side of the sheet), making this volume maybe 1/4" thick. Given the flimsy paper, there could have been 100 or more puzzles (50 sheets) without adding any appreciable weight or thickness to this book, and I'd consider it a better value. For $2 more, The New York Times Little Black (and White) Book of Crosswords (along with others in their hard cover spiral series) is in another league -- 200 puzzles with a wide range of difficulty, heavy quality paper, spiral binding protected by a hard cover, and top-notch printing/production.

Even though Ms. Jacobson is not longer contributing crosswords to the New York Magazine, and the clues require that the crossword addict remember a number of pop names and circumstances from years before, they are always a fun challenge.

I prefer the really hard stumpers like the NY Times Sunday crosswords, so these aren't as challenging. Yet they show imagination and are still fun. Occasionally I have to look up something to get an answer. They're not easy crosswords.

I really like Maura Jacobson puzzles. They are skillfully crafted and the right level of difficulty for me (I would estimate myself to be between Monday and Tuesday of the New York Times skill level). When she has a theme, you can actually see it throughout the puzzle. Many puzzles, I find, are supposed to have a theme but it's hard to see what it is! Highly recommend.
