"In 2008, they published the book "Store Front" a tombstone-size elegy to a disappearing New York of Optimo cigar shops, Lower East Side brassiere wholesalers and kosher dairy joints. Their new pendant to that volume, "New York Nights," is a neon-soaked celebration of the nocturnal institutions that keep the city that never sleeps awake, satiated and comfortably numb."- The New York Times

"James and Karla Murray are on a mission to protect and record New York's smaller spaces. Their latest book, New York Nights
, does the same thing for the city at night, the photos even more evocative as these small storefronts, bars and restaurants glow off the page.
What really makes the book is the research that they did on each place, speaking to the owners and collecting the memories of each place. This isn't just a photo book; this is a time capsule glowing with neon. It's a wonderful addition to the coffee table of any lover of the Big Apple."
December 14, 2012"The Murray's, who gave us the enchanting Store Front, a daylight look at dozens of mom & pop storesacross the five boroughs, have returned with New York Nights. But please don't think of this as the noir version of their first book. It's more like the Through the Looking Glass companion to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Gotham at night for the Murrays is pure enchantment." - Malcolm Jones Newsweek/The Daily Beast Winner of the New York Society Library 2012 New York City Book Award:

Praise for Store Front - The Disappearing Face of New York
"If you're at all interested in the passing cityscape, this book is a documentary mother lode."
--THE NEW YORK TIMES
"The tone is elegiac as much as it is celebratory; interviews with shop owners make it clear how close to extinction many of them stand, and the photographers report that nearly a third of these businesses have gone under in the time that it took to make the book."
--THE NEW YORKER
"A photographic homage to the city."
--NBC TELEVISION NY
"Soon James and Karla Murray's vivid collection of photographs may be all that remains of New York's colourful and distinctive shopfronts."
--THE LONDON TELEGRAPH
"The heart and soul of New York. Showdown for the most beautiful shops in the world."
-- DER SPIEGEL
James and Karla Murray have been photographing the streets of New York City since the 1990s. They witnessed firsthand how many of New York's local neighborhood stores were disappearing. After the publication of their highly acclaimed bestseller Store Front - The Disappearing Face of New York in 2009, the Murrays knew that in order to continue faithfully documenting the stories of New York's storefronts, they needed to explore the city at night.
In New York Nights, another layer of the city's rich history is revealed. Shop owners interviews bring to light their pride in both the history and craft of their business as well as their love for the City of New York and its endless possibilities,
All of these illuminated facades radiate a vivid sense of excitement.
