4.0 out of 5 stars The Pop-Ups don't
The first thing that happened when I opened this book is that the Statue of Liberty fell out into my lap. Then I discovered that the Empire State Building doesn't actually pop up; you have to pry it up, and hope that you're not wrecking something in the process. This is true of most of the "pop-ups" in the book. Also, lift-up tabs get in the way of some of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but badly made
A wonderful carnival of a book, and like many carnivals it has problems if you look closely. The pop-ups aren't always easy to work, and one piece tends to get fouled up on another. In addition, there are a LOT of little booklets and enclosures- many of them great in themselves but they tend to fall out of the book into your lap. Then you've got an evening of "Where the...

The first thing that happened when I opened this book is that the Statue of Liberty fell out into my lap. Then I discovered that the Empire State Building doesn't actually pop up; you have to pry it up, and hope that you're not wrecking something in the process. This is true of most of the "pop-ups" in the book. Also, lift-up tabs get in the way of some of the pop-ups (or vice-versa). I'd say it's a lot of clever ideas badly executed. Probably the makers were trying to do too much. But in spite of all this, I still like it, and if you collect pop-up books, you probably will too. Just be ready to re-construct and re-glue a lot of the stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Fun!, March 4, 2000

This is a fabulous paper construction that astounds me each time I open it. In addition to popups of the Brooklyn Bridge and other landmarks, the pages overflow with tiny newspapers, letters and magazines you can pull out and read. I grew up in the city, so it's even more fun to see it in paper. (My favorite? I think the Hirschfeld popup of the original cast of "Guys & Dolls.") A lot of fun, and one for which clean, dry hands are a must! Oh--the text aint bad either.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 3D Explosion of Wonder for the 5 Boroughs!, November 29, 1999

Wow! Salerno captures the wonder and spirit of NY with a stunning work of art. Truly a masterpiece mixing works from the best of New York's writers (including Sam Roberts) with truly breathtaking paper engineering.

Every New Yorker should have this book on their coffee table. A perfect gift for your favorite New Yorker.

I couldn't put it down! I bought one for each of my children so they can keep it forever.

I purchased this Pop Up Book for a 14 year old friend who enjoys Pop Up Books. At the last minute, I decided to purchase one for myself. Both of us are going to New York in the future and thought it might be a good guide. This book is absolutely wonderful. I have enjoyed each page. The detail is tremendous. The writing is entertaining and informative. The Pop Ups give you a feeling of "being there".

Still, it's a love poem to NYC, with all the best intentions.

I have to use my fingers to make them pop-up. Not interesting pop-ups at all-- just plain and simple.

5.0 out of 5 stars a book of surprises, December 19, 1999
This review is from: The New York Pop-Up Book: New York City 100: Historic New York, Celebrating the Century (Hardcover)
As one who dreams to some day live in New York, this pop-up book was great fun and most certainly made the dream that much more real. The facts was most interesting, the write-up in the form of "reflections" by New Yorkers themselves, also provided an insight into what life in the Big Apple is like. I recommend it to any New York freak like me!

This book the best i've seen as Marie Salerno puts together a book that is marvelous. The best piece was definitely the Federal Reserve Piece. This is the number one book I've seen in my 12 years of living, and it's great for both kids and adults, this will make the Holidays fun for kids and adults and a great present.

3.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT NEW YORK BOOK.....A LOUSY POP-UP BOOK, December 11, 1999
This review is from: The New York Pop-Up Book: New York City 100: Historic New York, Celebrating the Century (Hardcover)
As a history of New York, this book is a wonder of facts and opinions from some of the city's greatest writers and observers.

However, as a pop-up book, this pales in comparison to The Architecture Pack (whose design this book clearly is copying) or the work of pop-up genius Robert Sabuda. The most complex model in the book is The Empire State building which telescopes out of the book in three sections - unfortunately in my copy, the center section is permanently stuck (and won't extend) so the effect is completely lost. And the model of Grand Central requires serious "help" to pop-up, which, to me, defeats the object.

A disappointment
