3.0 out of 5 stars slightly disappointed
If you are looking for instructions on advanced turns, 14 to be exact, then this is the DVD for you. However if your looking for free style, steps, shine for men or ladies, none were included. Diane and Juan warm interplay make learning turns easy, my wife would have like Diane to give more instructions geared to the ladies. Please don't misunderstand me, Although I only...

The most enjoyable fun Salsa teachers on the market. A lovely young couple who love to dance & teach. Diana is the most enjoyable female Salsa teacher on the market. Great sense of humor. Very enjoyable. The teachers have fun & enjoy what they are showing you.
I & my female partners No.1 most enjoyable video to learn Salsa from.
I am going to review these videos as a couple of videos because if you are a beginner you will need to buy the beginners video first. In the Intermediate video they refer to step combinations taught in the first video. You can buy the intermediate video separately if you have done some training as they refer to common known Salsa terms.

Both videos are very good value, 52 & 45 min long , well produced good pause but they most importantly have a SLOW MOTION ON ALL COMPLEX MOVES as well as the normal speed , plus the breakdown of the steps. They give you both forward & back views plus both sides for cross body leads. They do not over detail the footwork but I feel it does not matter as you can rewind. They add several styling combinations to a move so you can choose what you like. They teach the women how to be sexy, dramatic, & romantic. They give the men tips on what behavior women find acceptable & what is not. These tips on how to avoid being slapped!!! are a must view for all male LA style dancers.
The teachers give you warnings on possible injuries on the turns to protect your partners.
Both the videos are full of useable steps & combinations. I enjoyed the fact they explained how to make the common combinations out ot the steps shown. They show steps in both videos that nobody else does but also give you the most common steps. I really enjoyed the Intermediate video. Very nice combinations.
Although there are some known NY steps. I feel these videos could also be used by LA style dancers as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars trendy, fast, and so much fun, April 12, 2005
By
I have been looking for chic Salsa instructional DVD for quite sometime. Many I found are old styles, out of date, and make me bore for first time I saw, but not for this one. This DVD is more than I ask for. It is trendy, fast, and so much fun. Some experts I know call the style "Salsa-Mumbo" or "ON-1". I see the moves (on this DVD) used in every salsa dance floors in NYC and Miami.

Lessons are easy to learn and broken down in small parts systematically. Slow motion at the end every lesson will help you understand more. Besides, this DVD includes a lot of salsa tricks which help you to be better dancer.

If you dance Salsa ON-1, this is the DVD you should not miss. However, it is for people who have some experience in Salsa dance. It is an intermediate level. If you never dance Salsa before, I recommend the beginner DVD from the same studio which equally good as this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Value! You can't go wrong!, May 6, 2004
Thank you Juan & Diana for sharing your talents w/ those of us who aim to improve our salsa. These two are not only excellent dancers; they're fun to watch! They exhibit their romantic chemistry and great sense of humor without disrupting the instruction process. Hey guys, Diana is definitely candy for the eyes!

To pack these 14 different moves in one video at this price is a steal! It definitely beats private instruction. My dance partner and I completed all the moves and executed them in the salsa clubs in 3 weeks. What I like most about these moves is that they're very practical for the club scene. Each move is broken down step by step and then replayed in SLOW MOTION. I haven't seen this done on any other salsa instruction video. Although DVD players are equipped to play in slow motion, it's nice to give the remote control a break while learning. Smart touch guys!

Cons: (1) I gave this video 4 stars instead of 5 because Juan & Diana should have demonstrated each move to music separately in addition to combining them to music (as they do) at the end. (2) The moves aren't exactly presented in order of difficulty.

If you purchase and complete this video, you would be very pleased with the professional/advanced volume, which I also gave 4 stars. Taught on 1 & 2 to music!!

Overall, this DVD is a keeper!!

5.0 out of 5 stars They Make It Easy & Fun...WONDERFUL!, June 1, 2004
By A Customer
I was a bit hesitant at first to purchase this DVD after a few of the "quality" remarks in a few reviews. By quality, I mean, the physical DVDs... I began figuring they may be "competition" (cause they read as such)or others that received a bad DVD...and didn't bother to return for a new one. I then read some of the other reviews and went for it! I am certainly glad I did! The instruction is very complete and easy to follow. I have seen actual classes that I can't follow but Juan and Diana certainly understand how to teach the steps and in a very fun way... by the way, Diana comes across a bit sassy but I like that!

5.0 out of 5 stars New York Salsa Intermediate Volume, November 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: New York Salsa - Intermediate Vol. 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a fabulous video. Juan and Diana are super dancers (Diana's spins are incredible) and teach many moves and sequences that I have been able to use when dancing. What is great is how the moves are broken down in slow motion so that you can see exactly what is being done. Also, the video is beautifully shot with many scenes around New York, including skyline shots, Hudson River Salsa cruise, club scenes, etc. Overall, this is the best salsa video I have seen and hope that Juan and Diana will come out with more videos.

3.0 out of 5 stars Less Than Fully Pleased, February 19, 2008
By
Ira Mark (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Description: This DVD presents ten or so turn patterns that I would describe, not as intermediate, but advanced. I have not seen Beginner Vol I, but that, I expect, covers beginner and intermediate. The instruction is fast-paced, but clear, and concludes each pattern with a slow-motion review. If you are at proper level to take advantage, this DVD will move you to the next level.
Accentuate the positive: "New York Salsa" differs from its main rival, "SalsaCrazy," in flavor. The instructors in NYS are Latinos and their dance has club-style flair. Heat, tension. SC takes its time, perhaps two DVDs to cover the ground NYS covers in one, and more important, is just somewhat more "ballroom," correct, cool.
Criticism: It borders on deceptive to call this DVD "New York Salsa." In New York we dance, as a rule, "on2," salsa not mambo. NYS teaches "on1." The two are different branches of one tree, distinctly different step patterns to the same rhythms.

I would endorse it because it presents nice dancible combinations and the presenters are clear and friendly with their instructions.
It was a bit distracting to hear the clicks of the shoes against the wood floor all the time however and I was sure i heard the horn of a truck in the background at one stage. the set is was to busy with too much to distract from the dancers themselves. Overall a nice dvd though.
