From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-A simple overview of the Empire State that includes discussion of its geography, history, industries, sites of interest, and short biographies of prominent New Yorkers. Written in the form of an embellished outline, the text gives readers background information on the major topics. However, there is not enough detail for any degree of substantial research. An abundance of good-quality, full-color and black-and-white photographs add to the understanding of the state's diversity as well as its celebrities. Two physical maps show the cities, lakes, and rivers. Although the book is clearly written and well organized, the brevity of information limits its usefulness. Conrad Stein's New York (Childrens, 1988) provides much more in-depth coverage, but for a higher level reading audience. Consider Fradin's volume an attractive introduction.
