Book Description

October 15, 2009
Imagine a New York devoid of people, its empty streets, bridges and waterways as silent and magnificent as an Ansel Adams landscape. This is the New York that Christopher Thomas reveals in duotone photographs that are at once haunting and nostalgic. Employing a large-format Polaroid camera, Thomas shot many of these images in the early hours of the day or with long exposures. The result is a rare glimpse of the Brooklyn Bridge without pedestrians; Grand Central Station without commuters; Fifth Avenue without cars, vendors, workers or shoppers. Not only do these photographs allow viewers to appreciate the spatial and architectural splendor of these New York City icons-they also evoke a dreamlike feeling that is unusual in visual depictions of the city. Timeless, yet unmistakably contemporary, this collection by an internationally acclaimed photographer is an important addition to the pantheon of photographic essays of New York's most beloved settings.

5.0 out of 5 stars New York like you will never see it November 23, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
having just been to New York and understood why everyone calls it a city which never sleeps, it is really great to see the city without anyone in the pictures. Technically well done and printed well too. if you are after a "different" book on NY this is the one !

5.0 out of 5 stars New York Sleeps...and has never looked more alive! October 30, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
A beautiful book. New York as one seldom (if ever) sees it. If you know any ex-pat New Yorkers living elsewhere who miss their hometown this book makes a wonderful gift to remind them of what they left behind, but also gives them a fresh way of seeing it. Though shot while the city sleeps and its inhabitants are nowhere to be seen, New York seems gloriously alive in these photographs. It is as if in the evident sense of silence that accompanies these images you somehow feel the steady, deep heartbeat of a slumbering giant. The images themselves are timeless, looking as much like a record of a long lost civilization as it is a profile of the city we know and live in today. Books such as this make me wonder how they could ever be replaced by some as yet unrealized digital version. This is not something you could appreciate on any e-reader, no matter how beautiful and sophisticated a wonder Apple might dream up. It is about the richness of ink on paper and the kinesthetic experience of feeling the size and weight of the book in your hands and the pages between your fingers.

By A. KIM
Format:Hardcover
Lived in NYC for long enough...never really saw this city like Chistopher Thomas did...He's just a master photographer with amazing point of view (BEAUTIFUL framing, perfect exposure...etc.!!!) I'm already overwhelemed by images on this book and I just can't imagine how it'll be like in original prints!!!
