Old songs / New Sound,
By Carmen "carmenstar" (Los Angeles, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New York New Sound (Audio CD)
Nothing will ever top Gerald Wilson's wonderful band from the1960's but it's great to hear Wilson's compositons just about anytime! His New York/New Sounds gives us some of his best songs, from the 1960's up to his more recent Theme from Monterey, with a band full of top notch players. I especially like the updated fiery M. Capetillo and the soft stirrings of Teri. I was glad to see this CD was nominated for a grammy and although it didn't win (which it should have, actually the original version of Theme for Monterey should have won when it was nominated too but that's another story) it's still worth a listen!

NEW YORK HAS A NEW SOUND,

This review is from: New York New Sound (Audio CD)
Gerald Wilson has a sound that it slower and more mellow than the excellent State Street Sweet. He came to New York to the best jazzmen there. Kenny Barron is my favorite. Blues for the Count is choice. Milestones kind of marks his career of fifty years. This striking man knows how to arrange his own and other peoples works.

If you are a jazz lover you must have this album. If you love solid, big band playing by masters of the idiom, you must get this album. Gerald Wilson meets Duke, Count, Kenton, and Quincy Jones on a level playing field with an unbelievably tasty playing, tight staff and arrangements that I never tire of listening to. Jaw-dropping voicings, rhythms, and high style make this album a requirement for any contemporary music collection. The list of personnel sells the disc and I can hear how much they enjoy eachother's art. A legendary presentation.
