Book Description

September 14, 2006
From the Adirondacks to the Catskills, from The Big Apple to the orchards on Lake Ontario’s shores, from the Allegheny Plateau to the Tug Hill Plateau to the Helderbergs, and from Lake Champlain to Cassadaga Lake to Canandaigua Lake, ghosts exist. They always have, as long as human beings hunted, fought, farmed, worked and lived in the region now called New York State. David J. Pitkin, historian and ghost researcher, shares 120 true modern ghost stories garnered from all parts of NY State. Most of these have never before been published and should be enjoyable, if a bit scary, to lovers of history and mystery.

More About the Author

Biography for David J. Pitkin

Following a first experience with a ghost in 1968, retired teacher and author David J. Pitkin has sought understanding of the mysteries surrounding life and death. In the process, he has written 8 books, beginning with Saratoga County Ghosts in 1998. Fascinated with the unconscious mind and on evidence for consciousness surviving body death, he published his first metaphysical novel, The Highest Mountain, in 2007. He also has completed two books of New York State ghost stories, and one detailing over 200 tales in the northeast US and Canada. In the process, he has interviewed over 1,500 people, whose stories make up his fascinating rendition of ghost stories. "My motto is: enlighten, don't frighten," he states. He recently completed and published New England Ghosts.

Conducting investigations for thirty-five years at many reputedly haunted sites in New York State, the New England states and Canada, he has become a philosopher lecturing on death and its aftermath. A resident of Chestertown, NY, Pitkin lectures widely on parapsychology and metaphysical themes, including ghost stories.

He studied dream analysis with Dr. Montague Ullman and facilitated a dream study group for eleven years. Pitkin believes many dreams of the departed are genuine ghost or spirit contacts. He holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Social Studies Education from S.U.N.Y., Albany, and a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology from Goddard College, Plainfield, VT. He is also a professional numerologist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wide spectrum of all kinds of haunts in NY, November 11, 2006
By
Ghostlady (Boston, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New York State Ghosts, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
This is a very full 352 pages of all kinds of hauntings around the state of New York. There is no lack of any area you might be interested in: haunted houses, inns, offices, and public buildings. The writing is well done and appropriately mixed with verbatim firsthand accounts. I especially like that Mr. Pitkin includes a photo with most of his entries so it's easy to picture the settings as he describes them in detail. With its wide variety of interesting accounts, I'd definitely recommend this book.

If you're looking for stories that are scary or fascinating or even mildly entertaining this isn't it. Pitkin makes the supernatural into something pedestrian and very, very boring. Avoid at all costs!
