New York Times - New York Metro Edition

If you want your political views pandered to then go to Fox news or Moveon.org. The New York Times will only give you a fair and balanced assessment of the happenings in the world. Just like Fox news they can be biased in their editorials but they differ sharply. I am a G.W. supporter but it is my duty as an American to understand the issues of today from every angle-not just the one who is in power at this time.

For more than a century, the New York Times has been the gold standard against which all other newspapers were mentioned. Its coverage of national, international, and local news was unparalleled. It became famous for its in depth analyses of science, literature, theater, in short just about any arena of human endevour. In all of these matters but one, it still is. And that one is its strident anti-Republican bent in general and anti-Bush animus in particular. And that is really too bad since I greatly enjoy its articles on all topics but politics. I do not say this only because I alone bemoan this drift to the left. The number of subscribers has decreased greatly over the past decade to the point that the continuity of this giant of journalism is now in question. The readership of the Times cannot consist solely of Bush bashers. There are very many conservatives who might otherwise wish to return if they could read of truly impartial political coverage. But given the bent of the Times' top management, this return to unbiased reporting is not likely to occur anytime soon. The most likely result is that it will continue to drown in a sea of red ink despite the high quality of its other areas of concern. And yes, I am a conservative who is old enough to remember when the Times knew the difference between straight news coverage and an op ed piece.

ADDENDUM: (1-16-08) On Sunday 1-13, The NYT reported that returning veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq have been committing murders in the US far out of proportion to their numbers. Conservative readers were understandably upset with this so they crunched the very numbers the NYT provided and as a result reached an opposite conclusion. Compared to their age counterparts in the US, returning vets committed far fewer murders. This twisting of statistics is typical of the long established Times policy of reporting news in such a way as to embarrass the Bush administration. One leftist reviewer wrote me that this left tilt is more a function of management style than actual left spin. This distinction escapes me so I conclude that I was right in the first place. The New York Times has lost the right to call itself a bias free source.

ADDENDUM II: (2-22-08) The NYT again shows its bias when it insinuates that Republican presidential candidate John McCain had an "inappropriate" relationship with an attractive blonde lobbyist. It presented not a whit of evidence other than "anonymous sources." The NYT knew about this even back in January when it officially endorsed McCain but chose to sit on it so as to maximize what it hoped would be harmful negative fallout. The NYT apparently values leftist ideology over profit or even credibility.

We receive both the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. The WSJ provides useful, sometimes dry news related to the economy. Their editorials tend to be right-leaning, with an emphasis on the bottom line. The NY Times covers a broader spectrum of news and interests. I can see how conservatives might feel their editorials are more left-leaning, as they are more sympathetic toward social and environmental concerns. I have to say that the writing in both publications is exceptional, but the New York Times is just more interesting to read.

Honestly I never liked the New York Slimes for their very biased reporting. The constant telemarketing calls I get from tele-used car salesmen even infuriates me more. I have found very little worthwhile information in this rag and it is easy to sell why they had to have such a big layoff recently.

I was particularly disgusted in how this rag blindly supported John Kerry last year without ever checking the facts. They were no different than Dan Rather.

Today with the internet and quality tv programming such as what is on FOX News, who needs the NY Slimes? Certaintly not me and obviously many more people feel exactly the same way.
