5.0 out of 5 stars New School Artists Sing Old School Classics!
A meeting of the young and the old as contemporary artists take their spins on songs made famous by others. There is obviously a great deal of respect for the original versions here; the renditions featured here are almost reverential in their execution. Highlights include Brownstone's reworking of The Emotions' classic "Don't Ask My Neighbors," "A Song...

5.0 out of 5 stars New School Artists Sing Old School Classics!, December 21, 2000
This review is from: New York Undercover: A Night At Natalies (1994-98 Television Series) (Audio CD)
A meeting of the young and the old as contemporary artists take their spins on songs made famous by others. There is obviously a great deal of respect for the original versions here; the renditions featured here are almost reverential in their execution. Highlights include Brownstone's reworking of The Emotions' classic "Don't Ask My Neighbors," "A Song for You" by Gerald Levert," Mary J. Blige's take on Natalie Cole's "Our Love," and a remarkable Spanish cut "Lo Prometido Es Deuda" by Tito Nieves.

"Oldsters" B.B.King ("The Thrill is Gone"), Teena Marie ("Wishing on a Star"), and Chaka Khan ("Sweet Thing") are also on hand to let the "youngsters" know that they still have the "skills."

A surprisingly good performance is done by series star Michael DeLorenzo on "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight." It reminds the listener that the actor did have a musical career as one of the principal performers in the "Fame" movie and television show of the 1980's.

=As a fan of the show, I was happy to see the album released, but I was also a little disappointed not to see some of the other stellar performances from the TV show (e.g. George Benson, Jon B., Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill, etc,), nevertheless the album is incredible. It is a hard thing to remake oldschool songs, yet the beauty of NYUndecover is the fact that many of the old songs were performed by the original artists themselves, such as B.B. King, Chaka Khan, and Teena Marie. Yet, when you add the flavor of new school artists, K-Ci and Jo Jo, 112, the always underrated Barrio Boyz, then it provides for an incredible musical experince. This show, when it aired on FOX was amazing because it integratd Black & Latino culture, music, style, and action all into a one hour cop show, it is truly missed but I still enjoy re-runs on USA. If you don't have this CD, you are missing out.

4.0 out of 5 stars I had the best time at Natalie's!, June 10, 2000

This is a great cd to kick back and listen to. Teena's cover of "Wishing on a Star" was the reason I bought this cd(I've been looking for it since the day after the episode aired! ) but I enjoyed Chaka, Blacksteet, and even Michael Delorenzo(I didn't know he could sing! ) I have only one gripe(and the reason it didn't get 5 stars) where is Johny Gill's cover of "You Are My Sunshine"?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music!, September 14, 1999

I love every song on this cd; they are soft and relaxing. I especially love Michael DeLorenzo singing; I think that's my favorite song. I ended up buying more music from all the artists and its too bad there isn't more music from the show included.

Teena is the greatest. She can sing, write, and deliver, interpret a song like no one else.

heard Teena Marie sing "Wishing on a Star" on the TV series "New Your Undercove," I had to get the CD. Her version of the song was awesome. Love most of the other tracks on this CD. Producer James Mtume and his team did a great job on this CD. A must have CD for any collection

Old school with some new flavors. Old school with some old favorites, and boy do they all get down! Highlights are many. Play a mean air guitar with B.B. King and your "thrill won't be gone". Relax your mind as Teena Marie "wishes on your star". Get your serious Latino groove on as Tito Nieves cools you with "Lo Prometido Es Deuda". These are just my fav of favs on a cd that receives much play in my house. Even the over-the-top whining of Gerald Levert (hit the fast forward button) cannot stop this from being an essential purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars IF U LOVED NY UNDERCOVER & OLD SCHOOL BALLADS, July 22, 2000

I TUNED IN FAITHFULLY TO NEW YORK UNDERCOVER; I LOVE THE SHOW AND IT'S STARS....BUT I ALSO TUNED IN TO SEE WHO THE MUSICAL GUESTS WERE. EACH MUSIC GUEST HAD THEIR OWN SONGS, BUT IT WAS GREAT TO HEAR THEM PERFORM THE OLD SCHOOL CLASSICS. THEY BROUGHT NEW "FLAVA" TO THE SONGS WITHOUT CHANGING THEM. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE BARRIO BOYS VERSION OF "A LOVE OF YOUR OWN" AND WITH KC & JOJO'S VERSION OF "LOVE BALLAD". BUT THE SHOWSTOPPERS ARE TEENA MARIE'S VERSION OF "WISHING ON A STAR" AND "MISS" CHAKA PERFORMING "SWEET THANG".......BETWEEN THE MEMORIES OF MY FAVE EPISODES AND THE MUSIC.......ITS JUST THE BEST......
