BREATH TAKING!,
By A Customer
This review is from: New York Vertical (Hardcover)
New York Vertical is to my knowledge the best book there is! I want to congratulate Horst Hamann, he did the impossible to photograph the New York we all love. The black and white photographs captured the beauty of the city, the format of the pictures is incredible! It's a masterpiece! BRAVO

I received this book as a gift, and have since purchased 5 copies for friends and family. The author over the course of 5 years explores the city of New York using a unique panoramic format and ends up with really unbelievable perspectives of New York and wonderful prints for a book.

New York Vertical Rules!,
By A Customer
This review is from: New York Vertical (Hardcover)
I fell in love with New York many years ago and visited for the first time last summer. The photographer's capture of the architecture is outstanding, the accompanying quotes well worth remembering. So, until I return the pages of New York Vertical will keep the memory fresh. Thanks Horst.

Nice Photos, Not His Best,
This review is from: New York Vertical Postcard Book (New York Vertical Collection) (Hardcover)
I ordered Horst Hermann's "New York Vertical" after a trip to New York where I feel in love with the height and grandure. I bought it because I wanted something to remind myself of the magic I had experienced. I was then amazed to find this book of postcards being offered and decided to buy it so I could share them with friends and family. I was completely disappointed in the photographs that were chosen for this endevour as there are far more dynamic photographs in his book. I wish that care had been taken in the selection of photographs for this collection. If you are just wanting some cards it is fine, but if like me you fell in love with all of his work it will be a let down.

New York at it's Most Elegant,
By Mrs Parker (Santa Monica, CA USA) - See all my reviews

As a photographer who also has captured images of NY in black and white, I can appreciate this most beautiful publication. The meticulously printed duotones should be the standard for all photography books. Congratulations to Horst. Your book has an honored place on my coffee table. And this new, smaller size, makes it much more practical and affordable with little loss of enjoyment from the larger edition.

I wanted a memorabilia of NY buildings, including the Twin Towers. The photos are nice. I don't particularly like the quotes or phrases used along with the photos. Rather negative comments about NY. There is good and bad of every city and a more balanced theme in the quotes would have been nice.

This book may be appropriate as a guide of skyscrapers in NYC. But I feel a little frustration when I look as a photo catalogue.

If you appreciate clean black and white photography, and you love Manhattan, you must buy this. Not only are the photoes great, but so are the quotes. I came across this book in a bookstore, and liked it so much I was willing to pay $93, which made me feel quite guilty. It wasn't until the next day that it occurred to me to check out this website to see if I could get it for less. Of course that was the case, so I will be returning my unopened (it was shrink-wrapped) $93 book to my local bookstore, and re-ordering it through Amazon!

New York Realistic,

Horst Hamann spent around five years photographing New York City with a 6 3/4" X 2 1/4" panaramic camera and published the results in this oddly shaped book. The pictures don't focus on one aspect of New York, as Bernice Abbot did, but rather gives us what seems to be a much more human view of NY. A lot of the images obey the rule of thirds while combining people, personality and pavement into one frame. A visually stimulating book that not only shows an origional way to photograph architecture, but also provides us with an insight into a view of New York through one photographers eyes. |
