5.0 out of 5 stars This book was amazing
First of all...Wow, this book was amazing. I have always been a yankees fan. This book truly was the best book that I have every read that had it all. It had stats for number Junkies like myself, It had stories as well. There is so much info in this book it is mind boggaling. This book is a must buy for any yankees fan, or any baseball fan for that matter. This book is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Stories, but mostly useless numbers
First, I hate the Steinbrenner era Yankees, so my review might be biased. However, there are few baseball fans who take the game as seriously as I do, having played, coached, and umpired for the past 40 years. As a coach, I was a stat freak, tracking every facet of the game in an effort to find ways to win. But seriously, guys, how many wild pitches, sac flies, double...

Tremendous book. I've read a lot of Yankee books with good info, but the amount of research done by the authors is phenomenal.

I enjoyed reading the Sports by the Numbers title on Major League Baseball.
This book did a tremendous job capturing the importance of the NY Yankees in terms of baseball history.

This is an incredible book and a "must read" for all sports fans as well as Yankee fans! The additional information interacted with The Locker on the website www.Sportsbythenumbers.com is so unique and enhances the stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Numbers Junkies, November 17, 2008

This book proclaims that Yankee fans are "numbers junkies" because they boast 26 World Series titles and a host of other prominent numbers that are important not only to NYY history, but to baseball history in general -- and I happen to agree with the authors. I'm a baseball fan who tolerates NY most of the time, but I found this book to be very entertaining and the numbers, stories, and profiles of Yankee legends in this book were well worth reading. If you are not a Yankees fan you still have to admit that the Yankees' history and the history of baseball cannot be separated, which makes this book a must-read for anyone who likes to talk baseball stats and numbers.

I live in Athens and so those of us who are Yankees fans (of which I am one) usually keep it to ourselves. The past couple of years weren't so bad, with Atlanta really struggling -- but when the Braves were in the mix every year it was tough wearing pinstripes around here. With that said, I love this book. I love the unique format, of having 1,000 stories that correlate to 1,000 numbers -- usually in an obvious way, but often in some quirky or creative or mindboggling fashion as well. And I esepcially loved the chapter on Thurman Munson -- RIP Captain -- you are still loved and missed today. This is not your typically history book -- this is a fun sports history book. I pretty much guarantee you that if you have an obscure Yankee player in mind, you will still find him in this book -- and without question you will be absorbed by the amount of knowledge that went into telling the stories of the many legends: Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, DiMaggio, Mantle, and on and on they go . . . I love this book. And I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to read a great baseball book, Yankees or otherwise.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for New York Yankees fans, November 10, 2008
This review is from: New York Yankees: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports (Sports by the Numbers) (Paperback)
"Tonight, I consider myself, the luckiest man on the face of the earth."

The phrase sounds sappy, despite its meaning to Yankees lore. Yet, for Yankees Nation the phrase speaks true to their heart. Yankees fans bleed pinstripes, paying substantial amounts of hard-earned salaries to support their beloved ball club throughout a grueling season.

And usually, the Yankees thank them with victories. Championships. Memories that are etched in baseball lore. You can re-live all of those memories in this jam-packed informational tale of the New York Yankees.

DiMaggio. Mantle. Ruth. Those names are synonomous with Yankee success. But what about Giradi. Billy Martin. And on we go.

Your favorite Yankee is in this book. Guaranteed. You will read paragraphs and paragraphs about games, players and numbers you never truly connected.

It is an easy read. I finished the book in several hours. But what is great about this book, is you can use it as a reference book for years to come!

Great job!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best stats book on the Yankees, November 3, 2008
By
This review is from: New York Yankees: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports (Sports by the Numbers) (Paperback)
This is easily the best stats book on the Yankees that I have seen. I live in the Bronx and go to many games every year -- and I love the Yankees, love to read about them in books, blogs, the papers, and I love to talk trivia and stats about the Yankees with all of my friends. I saw this book when reading an online blog and so I gave it a shot -- well worth it. It is full of anecdotes on the Yankees that even the most ardent of fans probably didn't know -- and there are plenty of humorous stats as well, such as the #2 -- "the most familiar position in the standings for the Boston Red Sox" -- and of course there are many stats on Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, and Maris, plus great profiles of guys like Munson, Mattingly, Guidry, and Williams. This book truly has the entire history of the Yankees in an easy to read format that lends itself to very competitive discussions among myself and my friends (we all think we know everything there is about the New York Yankees) -- I highly recommend this book to fellow diehards who love the Bronx Bombers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Baseball Book -- even for a Braves fan like me, November 3, 2008
By
Mark Adams (Atlanta, Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New York Yankees: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports (Sports by the Numbers) (Paperback)
I love the Braves and I hated what the Yankees did to us in 1996 and again in 1999 -- but having said that, I also love baseball and as any true fan understands you have to respect the 26 titles won by The Evil Empire. So...I gave this book a shot, and found it to be well worth the time. It was painful that the Yankees 1996 victory against Atlanta was mentioned right there in the first few sentences of the book, but I kept going because it was an easy and enjoyable read that really does a terrific job of capturing "baseball history" through the jaded perspective of a Yankees' fan. I do recommend this book to any true baseball fan, however, -- and of course, if you are a Yankees' fan then you will definitely love the 1,000 stories told through this unique framework that combines stats, numbers, and history. The beginning of each chapter is slightly different than the other book in this series that I read -- on Georgia football -- because they all focus on specific players that are important to Yankees' fans -- guys like Mattingly, Jeter, and O'Neill, among others -- but it definitely works because they tell some great stories about some great baseball players.

A must-read for any Yankee fan -- and for baseball fans in general. The stories are informative and easy to read. Amazing information for arguably the greatest franchise in sports history.
