Book Description

April 15, 2003 New Yours Yankees
The New York Yankees. One hundred seasons of baseball. One hundred years of tradition. This official book celebrates the most successful team in sports history. Lavishly illustrated and designed with more than 175 photographs from the Yankees’ own archives, some never seen before, this dazzling volume brings to life a century of baseball with the Bronx Bombers.

This winning retrospective captures the glorious championships, intense rivalries, and unparalleled players who have thrilled millions of fans year after year. From the unbeatable, record-breaking 1927 Yankees managed by Hall-of Famer Miller Huggins to the ongoing legacy of Joe Torre and his phenomenal four World Series victories; from such unforgettable players as the Babe, Lou Gehrig, and Yogi Berra, to today’s powerhouse hitters Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, and Jason Giambi; from the early magnificent days in the House That Ruth Built to the Steinbrenner era that heralded unprecedented excellence for three decades and counting—here is an inimitable portrait of America’s team.

Taking you where no other book has gone before—onto the field and into the bull pens and locker rooms—it features notable essays by leading writers like Roger Kahn and Robert Creamer, along with dozens of candid, first-person accounts and reminiscences from the players themselves.

A must-have keepsake for every fan, this fitting tribute to the Yankees 100th season, a is brimming with some of the most astonishing athletes and accomplishments ever, including Joe DiMaggio’s fifty-six game hit streak, Roger Marris’ sixty-one homers, and Mickey Mantle’s Triple Crown season. Like the Yankees themselves, this book is sure to be a classic.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

It shouldn't be surprising that the powerful New York baseball team should offer their own perspective to compete with the plethora of Yankees-related titles celebrating the team's centennial anniversary. This coffee-table volume includes 175 exceptional photos from throughout the century, with stills of the greats (both posed and in action): Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, Lou Gehrig and Don Mattingly. The book-which includes contributors such as Bill James, Roger Kahn and Keith Olbermann-details the construction of the present-day stadium (which, begun in 1922, took only 284 days to complete), as well as the team's greatest moments and best lineups.

From Booklist

This is the "official" commemoration of the Yanks' one-hundredth season, a flashy compilation full of photographs that manages to be both over- and underdesigned. It is huge and heavy and hard to read and written by committee. However, that committee includes Robert W. Creamer, Peter Golenbock, Roger Kahn, and Keith Olbermann. The obligatory sections on Ruth, DiMaggio, and Mantle are fine, and there are two nifty sections by the NY/NJ Chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association on an All-Time Yankees Team and the Top 25 Moments--always fun and always fun to argue over. There's a lovely tribute to Bob Sheppard, the gentlemanly and godly voice of the Yankees for half a century. There are an uncommon number of photos of Derek Jeter and a cogently argued piece by Bill James on why the 1998 Yankees were the greatest baseball team of all time. Excellent browsing wherever there are Yankees fans. GraceAnne DeCandido

1.0 out of 5 stars Impossible to Read, June 3, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The New York Yankees: One Hundred Years, The Official Retrospective (Hardcover)
Now I know why this was shrink-wrapped in the stores, which made it impossible to look inside. But after getting the book and removing the shrink-wrap, it is nearly impossible to read. The layout is similar to ESPN's Magazine, with small colored print on top of colored background, pictures without captions, etc. This was supposed to be for my Dad, but at his age he won't be able to read this. Heck, I can barely read it, and I don't even wear glasses. I'll never buy a shrink-wrapped book again. I should have known better.

1.0 out of 5 stars 100 Years?, May 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The New York Yankees: One Hundred Years, The Official Retrospective (Hardcover)
Someone can't count, because I expected this book to cover ALL of the Yankees history, but the first seventeen years get a grand total of TWO pages! Unbelievable. Then, I start to read and find out that part of this book was written by Bill James, the guy that works for the RED SOX! A few nice pictures don't justify the price - about as good a bargain as Danny Tartabull or Ed Whitson were.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not equal to the subject, April 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The New York Yankees: One Hundred Years, The Official Retrospective (Hardcover)
I'm sorry I had to buy this, because I have to buy everything about the Yankees and their anniversary. Although the pictures range from very good to spectacular, the book reads like it was written by committee. This is a sugar-coated history of the team, and not a very accurate one at that. You would have thought that a team that prides itself on being the greatest franchise in sports would have paid more attention to their own story and paid more respect to their fans, but the words here are strictly to fill up the pages. The official retrospective is just a picture book, and a very pricey one at that.
