This review is from: New York, Year by Year: A Chronology of the Great Metropolis (Paperback)
How many of us grow up in or move to the greatest metropolis in the world without realizing the history of the people and places that came before us. New York Year by Year starts with the arrival of Verrazano in 1524 and in an easy to read, informative, well researched and fun format breezes right up to the 231st consecutive annual performance of Handel's Messiah at Trinity Church. Did you know? - That Nathaniel Hale uttered his famous "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country" at 66th Street and 3rd Avenue (and that his actual words may have differed slightly). That after the Yankees beat the Red Sox for the pennant in 1999, Yogi Berra said to Bernie Williams, "We've been playing these guys for 80 years. They cannot beat us." These and hundreds of others nuggets appear as you march through the years of NY's fabulous history. A great table top book and a great gift.
