The term "probate" historically has referred only to persons leaving wills (testate) and not to those who died without one (intestate). Probate now is defined as the general class of records associated with an estate. This is a watershed book created to provide genealogists with the tools to locate probate records in New York State from the past 300 years. New York State Probate Records also gives practical information on how to access those records through the Family History Library in Salt Lake City (and local family history centers throughout the world) in addition to each of New York's sixty-two County Surrogate Courts, other repositories, and references to published abstracts in both books and periodicals.
