Harps & Hellfire, October 11, 2004
This review is from: New York's Fighting Sixty-Ninth: A Regimental History of Service in the Civil War's Irish Brigade and the Great War's Rainbow Division (Hardcover)
4,000 casualties in the Civil War, from a unit whose total strength never exceeded 3,600. This telling statistic implies the audacity and verve of this historic fighting unit, the first and true Fightin' Irish. Mahon's book reviews and details the storied history of the Fighting Sixty-Ninth in a lively and readable manner. There are many clear and illustrative maps to explain the deployments of field units, and the pace of the narrative resembles a well told story more than a dry history text.
The publisher has cooperated by producing a well bound text with clearly reproduced photographs and comfortable, heavy-weight paper. The hard cover edition will be at home on any bookshelf, and deserves a place in the library of every Irish-American history buff, every Civil War aficionado, and every Great War expert.
