5.0 out of 5 stars A Funk Essential, April 4, 2006
By
This review is from: New Zapp IV U (Audio CD)
Zapp's 4th record is slammin. It includes one of my favorite songs of all time: "Computer Love" which includes the lovely voice of Shirley Murdock and the Gap Band's Charlie Wilson. That song is a perennial classic and is lifts your spirits because it is so upbeat and fresh. Other funky, great tracks include "Radio People," "It Doesn't Really Matter," and "Itchin For Your Twitchin." These songs alone give it The New Zapp IV U a 5 star rating. These old school jams stand the test of time. Just see how many rappers sampled Zapp's work in the last 15 years or so! It's great party music. RIP Roger

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to Zapp's Synthelistic Universe!, September 12, 2003
This review is from: New Zapp IV U (Audio CD)
Zapp was a band out of Dayton,Ohio that pioneered in the latest technical developments & advancements in the music industry. They were among the first funk outfits to experiment with electronic & synthesized sounds, most notably the vocorder aka the talkbox, with extraordinary effects. In fact,Zapp & Roger used these elements in their music so often that it became their specialty sound. Roger Troutman also executed those loud & thunderous electro-handclaps in alot of Zapp & Roger albums. This album released in 1985 is Zapp's crowning achievement in studio recording. The New Zapp 4 U is blazing from start to finish & all the jams are indispensable funk classics. Zapp created a Synthelistic & Groovelistic stratosphere on this classic. Standout tracks include the dance-smash,"It Doesn't Really Matter",the Vocorder-Whipped Groove,"Computer Love",the deliriously funky cut"Itchin' For Your Twitchin'",the Smooth Synth Jam,"Radio People","Rock n Roll",and Zapp's excellent & remarkable rendition of "I Only Have Eyes For You". This is one album you have to own! You won't be disappointed 'cuz Zapp puts the flavor in funk!

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Albums Ever Released In The 80's, April 19, 2009
This review is from: New Zapp IV U (Audio CD)
First Of All I would really have to say that Zapp & Roger's music is Extremely AWESOME!!! I've just recently gotten two of their CD's, I've got their All the greatest hit's CD just the other week and it sounds awesome, and just yesterday I received this CD The New Zapp IV U, When I popped this CD in my CD player I was like WOW, of course I wasn't around in the 80's, but I wish I was, I would have boughten this on Cassette and Vinyl. I do also have to say this is one of my favorite albums from this group. I have over 600 CD's and no joke, I would have to say this is one of the best CD in my entire collection. For anyone who love's Doesn't Really Matter, Computer Love, Itchin' For Your Twitchin', Radio People, I Only Have Eyes For You and Rock' N Roll, this is a must have CD GO GET IT!!!! I was jammin all day yesterday and today, and I'm sure it's highly rare to find a CD that you'll like all the way through, of course the disc is over 24 yrs old no scratches or markings what so ever, if you take care of things they'll take care of you, it doesn't matter how long you've had it, both cassette and vinyl, just make sure you put them back in your case after listening, that's how they stay clean and make sure you handle with care. I was cuttin a rug on this here album, so glad I own a copy of it. This CD is Pretty rare, if you find it make sure you keep it, it's a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wicked, there is nothing like this!!, July 9, 1999
This review is from: New Zapp IV U (Audio CD)
Again the soul industry had given birth to another great artist, Roger Troutman is uniquely famous for his synchronised voice in Zapp. If you ever wanted to know who introduced syncronise voicing to the present R&B then Roger is your man. I guarantee you you will not find anything like this album anywhere else.

I've always enjoyed the music of the Troutman Brothers and I have the original Vinyl Album (in excellent condition), but needed to get the CD in order to listen in my car. I have nothing negative to write as I am a true fan. Although Roger & Larry are no longer with us, the music of Zapp/Roger Troutman lives on. This is why it was important for me to secure the CD. I hadn't listened to this particular album in over 15 years and now that I have the CD, it's played each time I'm in my car, especially tracks 4 & 5. Lovin' it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The New Zapp 4 U On Station WZAP!!!!, July 16, 2007
This review is from: New Zapp IV U (Audio CD)
After three amazing albums starting from 1980's incredibleZapp album Roger and Zapp finaly decided that it was time to back away from P-Funk as it's primary musical influence. On this album Zapp decide to head in two new directions-one of which is more it's own style and a hefty dose of Prince's Minneapolis sound a long the way. While 'The New Zapp 4 U' doesn't shy away from technology (their music had always been based around it) their own funk, along with the fact they were throwing hip-hop scratching into the mix with more regularity really push this music out!All nine of these songs are incredible;in terms of funk "It Doesn't Really Matter" is almost impossible to beat, with it's roll call tribute to Roger's heros (namely James Brown and Stevie Wonder) while "Cas-Ta-Spellome" and "Ja Ready To Rock" actually go deeper into the bass then you'd normally think one could go. Going for the kind of variety Zapp were always so good at presented "Computer Love" is probably the finest example of quiet storm scratch hip-hop (long before LL Cool J did "I Need Love") while Zapp take "I Only Have Eyes For You" into heavy 80's elronically textured dynamics.80's technophobes beware yes but it's my favorite cover of that song!"Ichin' For Your Twitchin'" is probably the most thoroughly Minneapolis type tunes on this recording-it even reference Prince's "Irresistable Bitch" in part of the melody!"Rock 'N' Roll" really does what it says-throws some heavy hard rock guitar riffs into what sounds like either a black mans tribute (or parody)of 80's hair metal, with a funky twist. The bouncy "Radio People" has one of the most clever melodies (as well as some seriously baaad funk backbeats) on any Zapp album. The biggest treat on the album is "Make Me Feel Good",the very best of Zapp's "modern blues" tunes they always included on their albums with it's tasteful synthesizers and irresistable rhythms!A lot of people, even some reviewers will tell you here that there are too many electronic sound effects on this album and the songs are missing.Well that is sure not the case;the songs here far transend whatever (albeit KILLER) electronics Zapp throw at the listener! So if your a Zapp fan or are exploring the very finest of 80's funk or electro funk this is one of the best places to go!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than I Thought, August 6, 2004
This review is from: New Zapp IV U (Audio CD)
As a 16 year old choreographer for a Hip Hop team I listen to old music. I listen to Marvin Gaye, Eric B. and Rakim, The Gap Band, Bobby Brown, and many others. This album opened my eyes to see that Zapp was more than Computer Love and I wanna be your man. I had bought this album on a whim because I couldn't find it anywhere else. This album is excellent. My favourite song on the album is It Doesn't Really Matter. It's odd to hear songs from the 80's talking about who they listened to. But It puts music into perspective. So if anyone asked me if they should buy this album I would have to say YES! YES! YES!
