I was skeptical, but now very impressed,

I built my woodshop which is well insulated (R19 in walls, R40 in ceiling) and about 460 square feet with 8 foot ceilings. Living in Iowa, I was skeptical whether this heater could do the job where it sometimes gets 10 to 20 below for several days in Dec and Jan. Those fears were alleviated.
Edit as of 01-03-09. The local news just advised that here in my area, it is the 9th coldest December since 1897 when they started keeping track. They also said it is the second snowiest December on record. There were several days below 0 and a couple to -20 ambient temp which is common in those months any Winter. If you are at all concerned that the heater can handle a level of cold that commonly reaches 33 below (wind chill) and -20 ambient temp, worry no more. I kept the heater on the third mark out of 10 and it maintained between 49 and 53 depending on the coldness of the night. When I went out to work, I turned it up to a tad beyond LOW and it leveled at 60 degrees. It's also very quiet in that I'm able to have a normal voice conversation with anyone present and we aren't really aware when it turns on. Very nice not have the smell of fuel oil in the air. I'm very happy with the purchase.

Dayton G73 heater,
I purchased this heater for my 700 sq. ft. shop with 12' ceiling (well insulated). In the first hour it raised the temperature from 43 to 55 degrees (F). After two hours temp. was up to about 60F. I was impressed.
It is small, quiet, and produces great heat for its size. Thermostatically controlled fan will cycle on and off until the ambient temperature is above 55 or so, then will run continuously until reaching desired temp. Good heat with poor documentation. Documentation does not give a clue as to how to connect to today's 240v 4 wire connections. The heater requires a 240v 30amp 3 wire connection. I have a 30 amp 4 wire outlet. Therefore, I purchased a 4 wire 240v dryer pigtail from Home Depot. Then I connected black to black, red to white, and green to green (ground). Black and red are the two incoming hot wires in newer 240 volt 4-wire arrangements...I presume. I am NOT an electrican. The 4th wire (white) in this case is not needed. I capped the white wire and tied it off inside the heater. Expect some smoke in the first couple of minutes...from oils on the heating elements, etc. It is a nice heater considering price and size. I subtracted one star in my rating due to the poor documentation.

I spent a lot of time debating the type of heater for a three car garage - well insulated, with 9' ceiling. In Oklahoma it does some times get pretty cold. However, when it is in the 20s outside my garage is warm and comfortable. The thermostat is great. I have the heater waving a wall so it never is blowing on me. I found it easy to install if your comfortable putting in 2 - 30 amp breakers and fishing some wire.
Actually, I did really well buying this and thanks to all the people who wrote reviews that helped me decide.

Great quiet heater. It's heating my 36x30 3 stall garage with 9ft ceilings. 32 degrees outside and the heater took it up to 60 in an hour.

Big heat in a small package.,
This heater is made by the same company that makes the Farenheat model of this same product. For about $30-40 savings you can pick up that model.
Overall a great product. I am located in central North Dakota and have this heater in my 3 stall garage. I have the thermostat set to a notch below the low setting and it keeps it at a comfortable 45F. Expect a hike in the electric bill, but its to be expected.

My Shop is a little over 500sq ft not insulated and this little giant heat it up with ease and keeps it that way. When I first installed it the temperature outside was around 30 degrees and in less than 45 minutes my shop was at 72 degrees. It is also very quiet and very easy to install. You can hard wire if you do not have an outlet for 220v near by but if you do like me just pig tail it with a 30 amp #10 cord/cable and you`re done. I`m very happy with this Dayton G73 Electric Garage Heater With Built-In Thermostat. A+
Jan-2-2011. I'm still very happy with this unit although the thermostat switch burned out on me one year after, I think it was the weather was really cold and I was using my garage all day for a few days in a row with a project I was working on and did not gave the heater any slack, but anyways in case someone has or have in the future the same problem this is the part you need to buy "Berko Replacement thermostat 5813-2050-000" it goes for around $35.00 but I bought mine on Ebay for 23.00 shipped. Hope this help someone down the road. David

This item arrived with adequate instructions and I had already had the electrical work plumbed in for 240 V, so the installation was a breeze. This was installed in my basement, so that I can work in my woodshop during the winter months. The heat output is excellent. I'm not sure of what the monthly increase in electric costs will be, but the ability to use the basement is a plus anyway. You can adjust the direction of heat flow, heat output and the built-in thermostat allows for shutoff when the desired temperature is obtained and turns on again when needed. Good item for the price.

I have an attached single car garage that I primarily use as a workshop. The garage has been insulated and dry-walled. Initially I tried heating the garage with a propane heater that I had purchased previously for use while building my addition. It generated alot heat but was noisy and had to be vented.
In doing my research, I quickly determined that an electric heater was going to be the most simple and least expensive solution for my needs. I am very comfortable with adding circuits (safely / to code) so the 240volt was outlet not too daunting. I liked the G73 because of the features (thermostat, low fan noise)and straight forward install. I found the reviews here on Amazon to very helpful, there is even some excellent pictures of an installed unit. Once the unit arrived, it took me a couple of hours to install the circuit (fishing a cable into the basement back to the sub panel), in the end I chose to NOT hardwire it, but rather install a 240volt outlet in the garage, and installing a cord on the G73. This allowed for easy removal in the summer if I wanted to store it for some reason. Once the unit was turned on, I was very pleased that it was able to quietly raise the temperature in the garage by nearly 15 degrees within the first hour. When I do leave it on overnight I just keep it around low, it keeps the garage around 60 degrees. The unit has been installed for roughly 4 weeks, I am very pleased with this purchase. |
