Book Description

The book “Newyorican” is based on a True life story of a child born and raised in Brooklyn New York. This will be an all tell book of the life story of a boy from the day he was born in Brooklyn New York in 1968 to a stripper mom who gave him away to his aunt that raised him the best she could. Getting into depth on how he grew up in a home with a step dad that was an alcoholic and a home filled with a family that practiced Espiritismo or Santeria (black magic). How life was in the East New York section of Brooklyn in the early 70's and how the Bushwick section was when he moved there in 73 when "Up Rocking" was the new thing. Without any real guidance or education the child ended up in the Marcy projects in Brooklyn. How he started hustling in the unforgiving streets of New York City and how he ran an illegal drug ring in four of New York City five boroughs. He was then forced to flee the city and bring the only thing he knew as a family in order to keep them all alive. Will his past catch up with him? Is there any way he can change and better himself? Or was it just too late for change? Read the book and you will find out.

“Newyorican” is based on the true life story of AC Cruz, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York by Puerto Rican parents. Desperate to care for a dysfunctional family, Cruz leaves school in the 7th grade to sell drugs on the city streets. Dealing cocaine, heroin and crack before turning 18, Cruz experiences life in the fast lane with money, guns, cars and women in a dangerous game that lands the author from rags to riches and back several times over. How does an adolescent become known as "the Kid," the unspoken gang leader and money manager for hundreds of thousands of dollars moving monthly through the business?
Read this true story and be taken inside the fascinating life of AC Cruz.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Newyorican - a compelling read April 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Someone mentioned that the grammar in this book is slightly askew. But when does a good storyteller have to have good grammar. AC Cruz is telling his story and it's compelling and that's all that's needed for a good book. He brings you into the moment and educates the reader about a lifestyle that would you wouldn't ordinarily be privy to. His story evokes compassion for the hardships he endured and sometimes anger towards those that delivered him hard knocks. Every word drives you forward to the next chapter and each chapter is more revealing and naked than the previous chapter. It's a tremendous insight into the lives of young people that live and endure complex lives that are sometimes dysfunctional at home and enterprising in the street. I can't wait to read more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint hearted March 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a catharsis. To forgive himself for the crimes of his past the author must face and acknowledge them. Hence this memoir.

It is mesmerising. But it is also a difficult read.

Not because it is poorly written, because it is not.

Not because the story bores, because it does not.

It is difficult because it is a litany of drug selling, easy betrayal, casual terrorism, casual sex and brutality on a monumental scale.

The author's voice is raw and flatly uncompromising. It portrays without seeming embellishment a world that most of us fervently thank the fates for sparing us from. How the author escaped death or jail is testament to perhaps his survival skills, his incredible luck or his wish to put such a life behind him.

This is a story that stirs emotions, often anger, while reading.

So why have I given it a 5 star rating?

Because the story is a powerful one, powerfully told.

Has the author forgiven himself? Could you come to terms with such a past? Has he earned his second chance?

Perhaps we find out in the sequel, King of the Woods.

5.0 out of 5 stars A genuine true story of life in the city. May 7, 2012
By Dylan
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book tells the whole story about the devils AC cruz faces and how he managed to face them and write about it. There is so much details in this book that I can relate to and feel comfort from knowing I'm not alone in this. Definitely an inspiration to get others to write about their stories as well. I personally live with PTSD and anxiety issues. A lot of them were calmed from reading this book. Life in New York has it's good side and bad side. It reassures you that everyone can choose to change if they want to. AC put's his words into his book with a passion for freedom. I believe today he is free from most of his past. Every now and then I see AC Cruz online with Google Plus and I see a man who made a transition from dark to pious. I highly recommend people to read his story because, it will change the way you think.
