Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The editor, a registered nurse with more than 20 years' experience in the care of newborn babies, has pulled together the comments of a number of nurses, many of them neonatal specialists, to provide the families of sick and premature babies some guidance in caring for these infants. Topics range from identification of the healthcare professionals working in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to typical problems with special-care babies to moving out of the NICU. There is also a chapter about dealing with the death of a special-care baby. Numerous photographs and line drawings complement the well-written and well-organized text, and the useful appendixes list numerous organizations and support groups. Aimed at educated lay readers, this well-researched book complements Theresa DiGeronimo and Frank Maginello's Your Premature Baby (Wiley, 1991) and Susan Ludington-Hoe and Susan Golant's Kangeroo Care: The Best You Can Do To Help Your Preterm Infant (LJ 9/1/93). Recommended for consumer health/patient education collections.?Mary J. Jarvis, Methodist Hosp. Medical Lib., Lubbock, Tex.

Review

The all-inclusive subtitle is indeed accurate - this bargain-priced reference book for new parents facing a newborn's health problems and the medical community's response to them, covers it all. Trying to untangle medical terminology, hospital procedures that may be painful for the infant and frightening for the parents, the seemingly limitless personnel now charged with your baby's care and the unknown future, all during what should be a time of family joy, is what every parent dreads being faced with. Newborn Intensive Care provides a calm, caring but realistic guide to help families cope. Well-informed parents will be more apt to make correct decisions, ask the right follow-up questions and consequently worry less. This book succeeds brilliantly in providing information - both technical and anecdotal - that will turn parents into well-informed medical consumers and advocates for their baby's care. The book includes a thorough index and glossary for quick reference when medical personnel use technical and confusing language. There is also a bibliography, helpful photos and diagrams and encapsulated notes on outside margins throughout. The chapter on taking your baby home from the hospital - Homeward Bound, Chapter 15 - is excellent, and conveys a sense of optimism and joy, though problems are addressed realistically. This is a book that should be in every hospital's newborn intensive care unit. -- From Independent Publisher

5.0 out of 5 stars Calming and Brilliant. This book saved my sanity!, June 30, 1999

This review is from: Newborn Intensive Care: What Every Parent Needs to Know (Paperback)
This book shows the caring yet realistic way through the NICU. I ordered this book while in the hospital three weeks prior to my son's early arrival. It made more sense in the NICU, showed me what to exepct and gave me more knowledge to adequately approach my son's medical team without feeling helpless, stupid and uninformed. Being a more well-informed parents allowed us to make correct decisions and allowed us to "TRY" and worry less. This book even had experimental research in it, with which our son would not have survived. I was told of an experimental protocal our son was a candidate for and the NICU book had information on it! Technical and medical information was presented in a concise and thoughtful manner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for families with/expecting premature infant, June 15, 1998
This review is from: Newborn Intensive Care: What Every Parent Needs to Know (Paperback)
This is an excellent resource for anyone who has or is expecting a premature infant. Of the many books I read during my daughter's extended NICU stay, Zaichkin's was the most informative and well-written. It addresses in detail all of the medical conditions and complications that typically befall infants born too early, as well as the emotional side of parenting in the NICU and preparing to take your baby home. I especially recommend it to any expectant mothers on bedrest who are likely to give birth prior to term, as it is an excellent way to prepare for life with a preemie.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE most important resource for parents of NICU infants., September 29, 1998
This review is from: Newborn Intensive Care: What Every Parent Needs to Know (Paperback)
Families that experience parenthood in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) experience a very different beginning. They often feel intense powerlessness and a lack of control. Many families will share that "it doesn't really feel like this is my baby."

This book, written by a knowledgeable and sensitive NICU nurse and her colleagues,, will help parents the journey through newborn intensive care. The book is extremely detailed and exquisitely accurate, yet easy to read. It contains a wealth of information to arm parents with the information they need to ask questions, to question answers, and to work with the health care team as a true partner in their infant's recovery.

The book is written by a group of seasoned NICU nurses who convey a sensitivity and empathy that reaches out from the pages at every turn.

As a professional advanced practice nurse, who has worked in the NICU for 20 years, I am delighted to share this resources with parents and grandparents at every turn.

Parent's are not and should not be visitors in their children's lives. Knowledge is power and this book will give you the confidence to become your babies BEST advocate.
