5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended Bible Overview, January 30, 2000
By
Jim Jones (Metairie, LA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Newcomer's Guide to the Bible: Themes and Time Lines (Paperback)
This book concisely summarizes Genssis to Revelations. The insightful ovservations of how God works through imperfect people along the way, and his message to all mankind through them are revealed throughout.

Helpful maps, charts and graphics are found every 6-10 pages. Margin notes found throughout the book are useful for quick scanning and review. The first 144 pages cover Genesis through Malachi and the last 99 cover Matthew through Revelation. (243 total pages. 28 chapters and two appendices)

The author holds graduate degrees in religion and history, including a Ph.D. in Reformation History from UCLA. His experience includes Preaching full time since 1986 after working as Dean of Student affairs at Pepperdine University and President of Comumbia Christian College. (paraphrased cover information)

The book is written from a factual, evangelical perspective, and doesn't have any particular denominational slant.

I'd recommend this book for beginning and intermediate Bible sudents. It might make for a good class as well.

I haven't read anything by this author before.

This is not just a newcomer's guide. I've given the book to people who have been Christians for years....including myself. It's a wonderful overview...so concise and correct.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Basic Bible Resource, October 23, 2008

This review is from: A Newcomer's Guide to the Bible: Themes and Time Lines (Paperback)
I've used this book for several adult Bible classes for new Christians. Too often we assume that adults know all the Bible stories, but that's not necessarily the case.
While no substitute for actually reading the Bible, this book provides a simple summary of Bible events. The author breaks down biblical history into 14 historical periods that he discusses, however more important events are discussed in more detail.
In my classes I let the students read the book to get all the background information and I choose a couple of points to expand upon.
The book emphasises the importance of Scripture and tends to approach it literally, but leaves issues such as creation v evolution open to class discussion.I have not detected any obvious denominational biases and would recommend this as an excellent resource for any church. It's easy to read with lots of maps and diagrams.
