Great Resource!, June 22, 2010
This review is from: Newcomer's Handbook for Moving to and Living in New York City: Including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island, and Northern New Jersey (Paperback)
I was particularly impressed with the fairly detailed overviews of each neighborhood, which is definitely valuable to a non-native New Yorker. It's also really helpful in providing essential info like what prospective tenants are going to require, landlord-tenant rights, and so on. It also give helpful suggestions for shopping, recreation and much more.
While not overly graphics-heavy, it's written in a really friendly style with a wink to some of New York's eccentricities. Definitely gets the thumbs-up!

I'm glad that books like these exist, August 23, 2010
This review is from: Newcomer's Handbook for Moving to and Living in New York City: Including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island, and Northern New Jersey (Paperback)
Since this is the 22nd edition of a book written during the year I was born, I have yet to find a reason to not trust the source. This is one of three books about moving and/or living in New York City that I have picked up. As I am writing this review, I am not living in New York City but I'm definitely an aspiring transplant itching to relocate from Northern Virginia. The other books I've read about relocating and living in the big apple include "Relocating to New York City and Surrounding Areas" by Ellen R. Shapiro and Rob Grader's "The Cheap Bastard's Guide to New York City". The 2009 edition of "Newcomer's Handbook for New York City" contains up to date information on housing resources, transportation, money, entertainment, shopping, and much more. Employment is the only important category of suggestions not covered in this book. The main obstacle for me moving has been finding work. However, if this dream comes to fruition, I'm sure I'll be using this book again for information on getting settled, finding a place to live, and all the other useful information contained in this text. I've taken many preliminary trips to New York City to find work and I have found the combination of "Newcomer's Guide", "Relocating to New York City" and "Cheap Bastards Guide" all complimentary to each other. If the move happens, I may have to write another review for this book.

Moving to New York..., May 12, 2011
This review is from: Newcomer's Handbook for Moving to and Living in New York City: Including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island, and Northern New Jersey (Paperback)
I HATE that my son and his wife are moving to New York, but, as a good mother would, I purchase them this book. They LOVE it! They have learned so much about the areas of New York, schools, transportation, weather, etc. etc. etc.
As much as I don't want them to move, if they are going to move, I want them to be prepared! This handbook has been a BIG help for them.
