Sam Docherty (Chris McCoy) is a good kid. He doesn't mean to get in trouble, it just happens. But when Sam has a run-in with a bully, the Docherty family - twelve-year-old Sam, his older sister, Courtney (Kate Bosworth), and their parents Gary (Matt McCoy) and Marilyn (Elizabeth Duff) - decide to leave their problems and the big city behind and move to a small town, where they can "really live." The Docherty family is then faced with a new set of problems as they find themselves ostracized by their new neighbors and trouble finds Sam, once again. The only friend he has is Chaser, a stray dog he has taken in. Just when it looks like things are never going to change, fate turns the situation around.
