5.0 out of 5 stars A fine introduction couples can share
The Newlywed Kitchen: Delicious Meals for Couples Cooking Together provides a fine survey simplifying the process of dual cooking, offering over eighty recipes that begin simply and increase in complexity as the book moves forward. Color photos pair with dishes to make this a fine introduction couples can share.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unless you're a die-hard "foodie", I'd give it a pass...
I received this book as a gift, and plan to return it if possible. I found the recipes a little too unusual - not really the kind of cooking I'd expect to find in a book for your typical newlywed couple! The book looks good - nice layout - but the recipes just didn't grab me. It's like the author went just a step too far in most recipes...what's wrong with just solid,...

I just made the Bourbon-Glazed Baby Back Ribs with Sweet-and-Smoky Barbecue Sauce and, if this turns out to be representative, I'm looking forward to using this cookbook a lot! The ribs were delicious but quite straightforward. The recipes in this book are for real foodies; just about every one adds some twist that a beginner cookbook wouldn't have. But the twists are easy -- bourbon and liquid smoke in the ribs, pralines instead of plain walnuts in the carrot cake and orange zest in the carrot cake icing -- and makes the final product stand out. This book is not just for newlyweds (I've been married 14 years), but for anyone who likes big flavors and wants to cook unusual but not especially complicated dishes.

If you love hot wings you will love Henry's Famous Spicy Wings. I made them for a party and they were a HIT! People could not stop eating them. They have the perfect spice and the panko adds great texture and crispiness. And who doesn't want to try an award winning mac-and-cheese? So easy and so tasty. The combo of the four cheeses makes for a creamy wonderful sauce but I think the blue cheese is what sets it apart from the average mac-and-cheese recipes. I think sometimes it's rare to find multiple favorite recipes in a cookbook. I usually find my faves in magazines but I feel lucky to have found a cookbook with so many wonderful recipes.

I received this book as a gift, and plan to return it if possible. I found the recipes a little too unusual - not really the kind of cooking I'd expect to find in a book for your typical newlywed couple! The book looks good - nice layout - but the recipes just didn't grab me. It's like the author went just a step too far in most recipes...what's wrong with just solid, good food? Why must everything have a "twist", or require ingredients you need to visit a specialty market to get a hold of? Not everyone is fortunate enough to have the Pike Place Market on their doorstep, and I have a greater appreciation for recipe writers that take that into consideration. I am not a novice cook and have more cookbooks that I can count, but this one won't be on my shelf - overall I just found it lacking in meals that one would actually want to cook on a regular basis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Recipes for the Foodie in you, May 5, 2010
This review is from: The Newlywed Kitchen: Delicious Meals for Couples Cooking Together (Paperback)
I just recently started cooking from the book. I have made two recipes so far and love them both
I made the pulled pork and it was out of this world. I actually didn't use the liquid smoke but found it worked perfectly without it. I also made the curried chickpea salad. The thing about both recipes is that both of them are going to be a favorite in my household.

I like that the recipes have some more interesting ingredients that really spice up the dish. The recipes are simple to make but have a great combination of flavors. You can tell that they have been tested many times.

I am definitely going to get this book for my NewlyWed Friends as well as my mom friends and other busy friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great recipes for all skill levels, May 12, 2010
This review is from: The Newlywed Kitchen: Delicious Meals for Couples Cooking Together (Paperback)
This cookbook is a great blend of recipes for foodie cooks of all levels who enjoy cooking as much as they enjoy eating. Written by a woman (Lorna) who is passionate about flavor - her recipes will not disappoint anyone who is looking for a cookbook beyond the basics. I appreciate that most recipes are for two servings. This way if you need to double any recipes you easily can without having to worry about waste. Although the book is titled the Newlywed Kitchen, the recipes would make a welcome addition to every kitchen. And if you're looking to impress someone, Lorna's recipes will do the trick. As an added bonus, the cookbook is filled with love stories of famous chefs and cookbook authors to inspire cooking together and loving much.

5.0 out of 5 stars a warm, wonderful cookbook for food lovers, May 5, 2010
This review is from: The Newlywed Kitchen: Delicious Meals for Couples Cooking Together (Paperback)
This is a delicious book for anyone who loves food and loves to cook in the kitchen together. I see that there is already a complaint that the book requires "special" ingredients and too many complicated steps. It's true this is not a book for basic cooks. There are other books for that.

However, the love with which the two authors created this book is apparent on every page. It's filled with interesting stories of couples who live a life of food and love (and full disclosure: my husband and I are one of the couples featured). Mostly, though, it's the recipes that shine. These are recipes intended to inspire couples to move into the kitchen together and stand in front of the stove, cooking and laughing.

I wrote about the book on my website, where you can find my full thoughts on the book: [...]

If you love food, love cooking together, and want to eat food created by a talented woman with an amazing palate, buy this book.
