Book Description

Outstanding Christian Thinkers May 1, 2005
Newman may be considered the most outstandingly original and creative English religious thinker of the nineteenth century. Here is by far the clearest and most concise introduction to his life and thought ever written. Avery Dulles is himself one of the most important living Roman Catholic theologians. The combination of this author and this subject is in itself a matter for celebration. Newman has countless admirers. Since the publication of Geoffrey Faber's Oxford Apostles many have also attempted to debunk him. But here is an account of Newman that is truly balanced and shows him to be as much a prophet for our times as he was for his own. Though unsuccessful in most of his undertakings in the Catholic Church during his life time, his genius has come to be more and more recognized after his death, and his influence can hardly be exaggerated. While writing this study of Cardinal Newman, Avery Dulles was himself created a Cardinal.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...a revival of much of the traditional understanding of John Henry Newman....a clear concise, and insightful survey of Newman's ideas."--The Weekly Standard, 5/5/03

"Exceptional"--Today's Books/Public News Service, June 30, 2003

"[A] fine and illuminating work on John Henry Newman." -Gregorianum, 2003

“As an introduction, it is well written, engaging, and relevant, offering a concise and thematic treatment of Newman’s thought while supplying adequate background knowledge about the various stages of his life. It also provides brief, but helpful, routes to the terrain of contemporary theology… Dulles’ [sic] accessible account should provoke further conversation not only among Newman scholars (especially Chapter 10) but also among general readers. This achievement rings true to the spirit of Newman’s work as a contextual theologian.” –Newman Studies Journal, Spring 2004 (Frederick D. Aquino )

"With his customary lucidity and concision, Avery Cardinal Dulles S.J…has written a most useful introduction to the life and thought of John Henry Newman…This thematic study meets the need for a compact presentation of major themes that are scattered throughout Newman's voluminous writings." -Catholic Books Review, 2004 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good Newman Summary, January 27, 2003
This book did exactly what Cardinal Dulles said it would, give a concise overview of Newman's theology as well as give adequate background on Newman's life and what significance his writings have for contemporary theology. I found this book to be a fine introduction to Newman's thought; readable for a beginner and yet thorough enough to be kept as an on-hand reference.
