5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive birding guide available., November 15, 1998
By A Customer
This book not only enables the amateur to identify birds from common to "lesser spotted" but shares interesting info too. More habitual birders will agree that this is truly the "birding bible". No one can argue with Ken Newman.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treat for bird lovers due to the top-quality artistry alone, May 26, 2006
Now in a fully revised eighth edition, Newman's Birds Of Southern Africa is a field guide to over 900 species of Southern African birds illustrated throughout with realistic full-color artwork. Each species has an entry with a map indicating their distribution, their common and scientific name, a brief paragraph with a basic physical description and notes on distinguishing characteristics, and a gorgeous, realistic color illustration. A revised introduction teaches the reader step-by-step how to use the guide to quickly identify avian species, and a glossary, index and birdwatching checklist round out this first-class resource. A treat for bird lovers due to the top-quality artistry alone, as well as being a quintessential identification guide, Newman's Birds Of Southern Africa is enthusiastically recommended for amateur birdwatchers and professional biologists alike.

I've been using this guide in Southern Africa for the last 6 years, and it's never let me down. Great book for those traveling to the region, but keep in mind that most guides at the wildlife parks will already have a copy, so you could save the weight and space in your luggage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate source for birders on safari, December 3, 2010

We were recently in Zambia visiting relatives who live there and had the amazing opportunity to go on safari at Mfuwe Lodge in South Luangwa. Our guide was a consummate professional, fluent in all the English, Latin and African names for the animals and birds, but even he kept a copy of this guide in his console. The birds were brilliantly colored and so varied, and we had fun thumbing through his very worn copy to learn more. As a hospitality gift, we ordered this for my sister. When it arrived, I was very pleased, as the revised format makes it even easier to locate a bird by its attributes. This guide is a really great choice for the serious birder as well as for anyone with even a remote interest heading to Southern Africa, as you will no doubt be mesmerized by the avian diversity there.

Have not actually been to southern Africa yet, but plan to do so next summer. I have been an avid birder for 3 decades, and it looks like the format of this book will be very useful for my trip.

I watch daily game drives that are live from South Africa. (www.wildearth.tv/home) I need the bird book to help with bird IDs, and it's a wonderful resource. If anyone should have the good fortune of traveling to South Africa, this book is an absolute must as a traveling companion for safaris and birding trips!
