Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered and expanded edition featuring the complete long unavailable 1958 Newport performance by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Professionally recorded, the set was devoted to Duke Ellington related tunes (including 'The Duke', Brubeck's homage piece to the master). As a bonus is a long version of 'Take the `A' Train', Ellington's signature theme composed by Billy Strayhorn recorded that same year in Berlin. Gambit.

VERY POOR SOUND , IT SOUNDS LIKE THE QUARTETS PLAYING AND PAUL DESMOND IS PLAYING IN THE NEXT ROOM ,I AND A BIG FAN BUT I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS CD. BUY THE ORIGINAL FSR-CD 557 WITH THE ABSTRACT PICTURE ON THE FRONT. CHEERS STEVE.

Brubeck and Desmond were still young and in their prime. Brubeck's solo on the "Duke" is still outstanding. Great sound for a recording over 50 years old.

Perdido: Proving they were the best Quartet in their time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brubeck's A-plus With Me, May 28, 2010

I bought this CD about a year ago, listen to it regularly, and it hasn't gotten old yet. My 89-year old Dad is a jazzer from way back, and I'm getting him this CD for Father's Day this year. I wasn't sure if he liked Brubeck, so I cleared this with him first. All he wanted to know was who was playing with Brubeck. When he heard Desmond, Morello, and Benjamin it was all right with him!

I'm no jazz (or musical) expert, by any means, so I can't offer more technical commentary. My wife's a professional classical musician, though, and over the years she has worked to refine my musical tastes by getting me jazz recordings on birthdays and at Christmastime. This is how Brubeck's music has made it into our home. It's grown on me, and this is the CD I tend to play most (with Red Hot & Cool second on my list), when I want to hear Brubeck.
