As a Colorado native, this is the book (along with Money Mountain for the early history of Cripple Creek and surrounding mining efforts) that we studied in school for our local history. It is the standard and anybody wanting to dig into the history of Colorado (Colorado Springs in particular) should start here. Although this may not be the end-all-be-all history, it is definitely the place to start.

Marshall Sprague's book is a very good account of the history and times that have shaped Colorado Springs, Colorado and the Pikes Peak Region. The photographs included help bring the stories to life and recount many who came to the area, fell in love with the setting and climate, and then influenced the growth and development of the region.

We give this book as a gift to newcomers to our community as a way of helping them understand the history of this special place.

I was given a copy of Newport in The Rockies when I moved to Colorado Springs and started working at a major telecommunications company. I enjoyed this book so immensely that I read and re-read it until it has fallen apart. So now I want a new copy to keep with my other treasures.

Coming to this area from Philadelphia, it was just amazing to see the street names and the names of some of the people mentioned in the book to be the same names as the local historic names from where I came.

Marsh Sprague researched the heck out of the town and came up with a fascinating story, full of accurate descriptions of people and places
He shows Colorado Springs' unique development and how it grew from an elite colony to a metropolis of major importance to the country's defense. Even if you're not from Colorado, Newport in the Rockies is fascinating reading, telling how the old west grew in that part of the country.

Just what I needed for Colorado Springs History I am learning just for fun. Love the old pictures and descriptions of things that were. When I went to some of the the places mentions things had changed but it was great to see where it all began.
