Editorial Reviews

Before the TV was commonplace, people saw the news at their local movie theaters. Newsreels were shown before feature films and at dedicated newsreel movie theaters in larger cities. These vintage Universal Newsreel collections are a way to glimpse special events of the past. A note on quality: Newsreels were not preserved with the same care as much other old film footage. Although most of the footage is of very good quality, this collection may have portions that are silent or have degraded audio or video. This collection includes the years of 1937 and 1938 and has a run time of 1 hour 5 minutes. Some of the news items covered in this collection include: President Roosevelt warns of a steadily-increasing danger of armed conflict menacing the United States; Special Release - Zeppelin Explodes Scores Dead; Remarkable New Aid To Navigation; Special Release - 425 Children Die As Gas Explosion Shatters School; Howard Hughes, wealthy aviator, takes off for New York in his 'round the world' plane; Thousands of radio listeners throughout the U. S. are frightened into mass hysteria by a dramatization of H. G. Wells' old thriller, 'The War of the Worlds,' as staged by Orson Welles; Mayor La Guardia opens Red Cross drive; FDR Leads Nation In Protest Against Nazi Persecutions; Light Tanks Show Their Prowess In Battle Maneuvers; Blue and Gray At 75th Anniversary Of Great Battle; and much more
