5.0 out of 5 stars I hate doing reviews, but this deserves it, I think., May 19, 2000

This review is from: News of the Stoopid [NotS] (Paperback)
A review of 1,000 words or less? That's kinda restrictive, don't you think? Granted, the average idiot doesn't know more than a thousand words, but I'll probably need all one thousand to figure out how to review a book, as it is. I'm really terrible at it, since, apparently, it's just another method of getting other people to buy a book

I don't wanna do that. Sure -- I want you to buy the book. I want everyone to read this thing -- someone might accidentally learn something. It might do some good. But I'm not going to try and talk you into it. A review is just someone's opinion, and they're not always printed word for word, anyway.

So, getting to my opinion:

Yeah. I liked the book. Quite a bit, actually.

The book is, well, true. Or, well, being listed as "fiction," I should probably say that it's 'dishearteningly accurate.'

It's also probably funny, but I'm not one to judge what others would find funny.

Then again, yeah. People will find it funny. People laugh at the gratuitous use of (and let me observe the amazon.com guidelines) "the f-word." And lets not forget the pictures. The pictures alone should sell it. Or keep it from getting sold in stores without a warning label.

Which would probably be enough to sell it, if it were a really lousy book.

But it isn't. That would be the good news, I guess....

What it probably is, besides accurate and amusing, would be offensive. But probably just to the people it ends up describing who realise it's describing them. The truth hurts, and all that.

Other than that, I don't really have much to say about the book. I probably can't; the guidelines don't allow you to mention any plot points. Actually, they ask you to refrain from giving any away. Not that there are any plot points.

Which reminds me of something that ought to be mentioned -- the format is really original.

Other than that....

The entire thing is written pretty much as well as the original online articles were written (a few of which are contained in the book). And about the only comparison I can offer to anything I've ever read would be that it kinda reminds me of either Carlin or Dennis Miller. But it looks a lot better on paper. Reads easier, I guess. That much is hard to explain.

And I'm getting bored with writing this, so I'm going to finish it up, fairly short of 1,000 words.

I recommend this book. Definitely. Yet, I don't.

Here's where I run the risk of being redundant. Smart people -- bear with me. I'd like to recommend this book to every idiot out there, in hopes that they might, as I mentioned earlier, accidentally learn something. Then again, that would be terribly optimistic of me. I'd do better to warn idiots away from it, to protect them. If you're not very smart, don't come anywhere near this book. Books... `bad'....

Ah, damn the reviews; read it yourself....

This book stands before of every ideal, and institution of America, and punches it in the stomach just to watch the fat wobble. If you ever get erked at any part of society there's a chapter in here just for you. But if you are full of warm-fuzzy all the time this book will let you know what most people think of you.

It's the bible for Skeptics, and Cynics, and anyone who hates the bible.
