This is a clever collection of Blackout poetry - not a unique concept but one that Austin Kleon has mastered. I keep this book handy when I want a quick dose of inspiration or even amusement. Kleon gives a great explanation of this art/poetry form and excellent instructions on how you can get started creating your own collection of Newspaper Blackout art. As a former art teacher and a long time lover of poetry, I would highly recommend this book for use in a classroom setting and it would make a unique and clever gift.

Awesome for a middle or high school classroom! Surprised I didn't find this gem until my 20th year teaching (I buy and read lots of instructional materials), but it wasn't until I beefed up my own (personal) writing that I stumbled on to this creative way to use text. LOVE this writing form and so did my HS students last spring! Check out A. Kleon's website and google 'blackout poetry' for SO many creative ideas... Highly recommend! *P.S. ~ We don't get to use this resource until the spring, after all of the standardized testing is completed; it, along with book groups, is a fun way to wrap up a school year.

I bought this book after reading Austin Kleon's books Steal Like an Artist and Show Your Work but this was his first book. The concept is clever but not unique to Austin and he admits that right in the beginning. However, I love the idea and I find it helps to get my creative juices flowing.

It's a wide collection of blackout poems to share with students or other writers, so they can model the technique.

Although this style of poetry has been around since the 1760’s, Austin Kleon had the accidental fortune of bringing this to the mainstream market. To best describe what Newspaper Blackout is, NPR’s Morning Edition explains, “Instead of starting with a blank page, Poet Austin Kleon grabs The New York Times and a permanent marker and eliminated the words he doesn’t need.” (Eliminates the words he doesn’t need…I love the way that sounds.)

Here's the big question that I couldn't help but wonder while reading this beautiful poetry collection: What the heck were the articles he took the poems from? I'd love to see what the original source was next to each one so I could REALLY appreciate what he extracted from them. Was it something about politics? An animal rescue story? Maybe that's Kleon's intention; have the reader guessing and laughing at how he found this poetry embedded in a plain old newspaper article.

It will never cease to amaze me how the most profound statements in life are hidden between the lines, and thanks to Austin Kleon, he's rediscovered the secret to bringing them back to the surface.
