4.0 out of 5 stars A useful resource & creative approach to language teaching!, May 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Using Newspapers in the Classroom (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) (Paperback)
It is surprising how often newspapers are overlooked as a valuable teaching tool. For one, newspapers provide immediate relevancy so as to spark student interest in current events around them. Besides, as newspapers are often written in plain, simple English, students will find them less daunting to read. This book gives teachers of English practical and creative ways to teach the language through the use of newspapers. For instance, the activities are created out of different sections of the newspapers -- from cartoons to editorials -- so that they provide a collection of challenging yet engaging activities to cater to different learners. The sample materials, combined with clear procedures and guidelines, make it a handy tool for the teacher. Definitely recommended for those teachers keen to explore new ways to enhance language teaching and learning!

5.0 out of 5 stars open pages on new ideas, January 6, 2011

This review is from: Using Newspapers in the Classroom (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) (Paperback)
Not only was this book brilliant in the days of paper based handouts, it lends itself to new 21st century literacies - the ideas within that is.

I think that this gem, a 300-ish page book on utilizing the newspaper in the classroom, and that the ideas are even better off from the teacher perspective as soft copy manipulation is easier - and the choice available online is unlimited.

This is a fabulous resource with ideas you can twist, warp, and develop further. Should be on the bookshelves of language schools and ESL departments alike. Will also be idea for keen individuals wanting to open pages on new ideas.
