Product Description

Product Description

This familiar apparatus dramatizes Newton's Third Law, which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Use to illustrate that momentum and kinetic energy are conserved. Lift and drop one ball, and one shoots out from the opposite side; start with two balls, and two shoot out, etc. Apply all the logic and laws of physics you want to this little gadget - it's still amazing! Built to last for years with minimal care. Includes an instruction sheet outlining the principles involved plus tips on use and storage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for!, April 5, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Looking at the picture, I was expecting something a little smaller, and maybe kind of cheaply made. However, I was surprised to see this large, robust version of Newton's Cradle! The device is about 9 inches wide, 7 1/4 inches deep, and 8 3/4 inches tall. The packaging it came in kept the balls from being bashed in shipping, so they all came in great condition! The frame is made of real wood, and had a fairly dark color to it, with a shiny finish.

The only thing that would have made this better would have been if the balls & strings were perfectly calibrated. I find that there is a small gap in 2 places when the balls are at rest. This causes them all to start swaying back and forth after a bit, so it ends up going out of whack. However, it is the concept behind this that rocks! It is about time I find this popular toy to place on my desk!

If you love science, and want to get a quality toy that can be used for educational purposes, this is a great item! A must for the science/physics classroom!

5.0 out of 5 stars Our new centerpiece, September 23, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My son and I play with it every day. I think it's beautiful! It's been on our dining room table since we got it (weeks now) and I decided to just keep it there as a centerpiece since we both like to use it so much. We seem to figure out a new thing to do with it almost every day. Interesting starting patterns, well made, hypnotic, pleasant to use. Very, very happy with this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Happy with it, September 13, 2009
We enjoy this one, it's just lots of fun. I agree the slight gap between the balls makes it fade out to swaying more readily than other makes I've played with, but better than what I've seen in souvenir shops.

Other than the gap it's well built, it has stood up to some rough handling by some youngsters, the box is great for storage. I take it out a couple of times a year.
Now that youngest is 6 I've left it out for them to play with, I try to supervise the 2 and 3 y.o.s though.

It's not small it's not large, it's just right.
