More Like a Mini "Toaster Pastry",

These are 1.5 x 3.5 inch thin little bars, which have a crunchy cracker-like outer, surrounding what seems like a very thin layer of soft apple fruit leather, packaged in 100 calorie portions. I'm giving it 3 stars because it could be exactly what you're looking for (if you like refined carb factory food), or totally unsuitable junk food (if you want protein and fewer carbs).
I thought they tasted ok, but my husband didn't like them. The flavor is fine, but the "mouth feel" is a bit dry & cardboard-like (to be lower calorie there are only 2 g of fat per portion, so there is little grease keeping the cookie part soft). You may like this crunchiness or not. It is also devoid of protein (<0), so those calories are almost entirely carbs (20g, the wrapper says 7g are sugar, but the box says 8g are sugar). Depending on your eating goals this may be good or bad. To my taste it was too sweet, but I don't normally eat sweets. If carbs are fine with you, you might get a much better food experience by eating a fresh apple, which would fill the stomach much better than these little things. Calling these "Newtons" is a bit of a misnomer. To me, a fig (or other fruit) newton has a certain thick soft mouth feel, along with the crunchiness of the fig seeds as you chew. I haven't had a "toaster pastry" in years, yet that is what came to mind as I tried it. I tried heating one in the toaster and it was good warm: it was like eating piecrust that had gotten a little bit of the pie goo juice baked onto it.

Pop Tarts for Adults....,

my whole family liked these. They are similar to pop tarts but without the icing, all the calories and with a crisper, fresher taste. I enjoyed a pack of them with a cup of hot herbal tea for a late afternoon snack. Kind of like a diet "apple pie" snack. A nice addition to the growing 100 calorie snack line up. I will be buying and trying these again.
5 stars.

These were an interesting snack. For each 100 calorie pack, you get two "crisps," which are like long cookie/crackers filled with the apple filling you find in Fig Newtons. They're not filling, but they're a nice snack. The crispy outside and chewy center create an interesting contrast. I wouldn't but them normally, though, for two reasons. One is because of the price. Two is that you can buy a regular apple and get 100 calories out of that, and it's much more filling and healthier for you.

I don't typically eat processed foods or snacks, they always taste funny to me... but these looked yummy on the box and so I thought I'd give them a try.
Anywho... I wasn't in the mood to taste them when they first arrived, so I put them up on the kitchen counter. Later that day, I came home to find the box Half Empty!! Apparently, my boyfriend thought I had picked 'em up grocery shopping and helped himself ;-). I asked him what he thought of them and he absolutely LOVES these things. Mind you, he also loves store bought cookies, potato chips, fast food - all things I don't have a taste for... He said these reminded him of McDonalds Apple Pies, without the overly goopy filling and a crispier crust. Nice. Well, I just had my first one today. It was tasty, but I found it a bit too sweet for my tastes after about the second or third bite (though I did eat the whole thing anyways!!). I think I like the crisp outer, better than the sweet sticky inner... If these were just the crisps without the filling, I think I'd have loved these. By and by, I almost laughed aloud though when I unwrapped my 'Fruit Crisp'... The picture on the box must be what my Fruit Crisp would look like after a cycle of steroids and a few visits to the tanning booth, lol. On a side note (for those of you who care) please note that while the Nutrition Facts read 0g Trans Fat, one of the ingredients listed happens to be Partially Hydrogenated Cottonseed Oil. I realize that the FDA allows for this so long as the Trans Fat count is below .50% per serving but I still think it's somewhat misleading. Bring back the lard!! (hahaha) My rating would have been 4 stars, but I dropped it 1 star because of the use of Hydrogenated Oil. My boyfriends rating would be 5 stars.

At first, these seem somewhat lacking in flavor. If you simply bite and swallow, all you'll taste is the outer cookie shell. But if you pause to chew each bite extensively, the fruit filling is quite rich in taste. Overall, I'd rate these a bit better than Special K bars. While they don't have the texture of a Special K bar, the flavor is definitely stronger and better. Nutritionally, they're very similar at 100 calories for a pair of Newton Fruit Crisps, which are about the same volume as a single 90 calorie Special K bar.

Sorry to state the obvious, but these are basically a crunchy apple Newton. The filling is the same as what is used in the apple Newton, only not as much of it, which does have a good apple-cinnamon flavor. The crust is, well, crustier in that it actually is sort of crispy and fairly thin. I was expecting this to just be a thinner Newton but they really do have a different texture and slightly different flavor with the thinner crust. I was expecting the crust to be moist but this does actually have a bit of a crunch to it, making the bar a bit chewy. The small sprinkling of sugar on the top adds a nice, subtle sweetness to an otherwise blandish crust. The bars seem small initially but I found them to be a perfect snack size. I would like to see these bars in a different flavor, such as a berry, as I, personally, would have liked that better. But, overall, I thought these were pretty tasty and would purchase them again. *** so, I just picked up a box of the Mixed Berry flavor as I thought I would like those better. Actually, it turns out I don't. The apple crips have way more flavor to them and taste quite a bit better, in my opinion.

First bite was like a cross between a pop tart and a cracker in texture. Crunchy then chewy making it satisfying as a munchy. Just for kicks I warmed one up in the microwave for 5 seconds, tastes like apple pie, would compliment ice cream and goes very well with hot tea.

It's hard not to like something pre-packaged with only 100 calories,

I tried the apple cinnamon flavor and although it is not something that lights your taste buds on fire, I did like the texture and the subtle fruity flavor. Each individually wrapped package contains two bars and they will only cost diet conscious consumers 100 calories (on the negative side...it contains 20 grams of carbs and 8 grams of sugar). The packages are small and will transport easily in shirt/coat pockets, purses, daycare lunch pails, etc. They also tear open easily. This snack reminded me of miniature pop-tarts that were toasted, cooled, and then wrapped.
I enjoyed the snack bars (I'm a sucker for quite a lot of the 100-calorie snacks), my 2-kids gobbled them up (yes....they're like most kids and will eat anything), and the husband thought they were "okay" (but kept going back for more). So all in all, I'll buy these in the future and will likely also try the other flavor (mixed berry).

My first reaction to eating this was that it was just ok. I had my husband try it and he had the same reaction. My nephew tried it and he is 8 and he didn't really like it. not sweet enough.
It was crispy and had an apple flavor but it didn't seem like there was enough apple filling. I guess that was to keep it to 100 calories. you get 2 apple "cookies" about the size of small granola bar they look like mini apple pies from mcdonalds. they have a nice texture. but they just don't have much flavor. but I think if you are looking for a snack to take with you and probably to keep you feeling full this might do the trick. |
