5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I had never heard of this author, but I liked the cover so I just picked it up. I'm glad I did. This is such a great book and very funny. Certain parts of the dialogue are so funny (things you might say with your girlfriends) that I would laugh out loud and people would look at my like I was crazy. And I think that is always a test to a great book. If you are out in...

1.0 out of 5 stars Best Thing to Do? Skip It!
First, an admission. I don't particularly care for books that emphasize the material belongings of its characters. I don't really care that every article of clothing in the protagonist's closet has a designer label on it. Nor am I impressed that she drives a Navigator. I am anxiously awaiting the day when Tupac returns, peace rules the world and Black folks ain't...

I will certainly keep this author in mind for future books. 5 stars. This book is going on my shelf for all time favorites.

I loved this book. It's super funny, well written, great characters, fast paced, and engaging. What else could you ask for? Oh yeah, the chartacter's are so life like I think this book is loosely based on true life events. I recommended it to all my girlfriend's.

I bought the book because of the great reviews. The book was more than I expected. It was a great story about love and life in general. Terri Carter's character was well developed. I felt as if a long lost friend was catching me up on her life with this novel. I couldn't put the book down after the first two pages. I have been bragging so much about the book, my co-workers are lined up to read it!!

This is definitely a feel-good book!! It left me feeling hopeful and positive. I could relate to a lot of what the main heroine went through in the story. Definitely worth the purchase price and will be re-read several times over.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Novel Vixens are going to have fun with this one!, November 12, 2009
This review is from: The Next Best Thing (Paperback)
From beginning to end, Ms. Berry hit this nail on the head. Tori Carter's character is like that of most women that I know, DETERMINED TO GET IT RIGHT! This book made me laugh out loud. Aside from the comedy, it forces women to take a good look at themselves and ask the burning question... What's next? All I can say is "On to the next best thing, Deidre Berry!" Great Job!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Debut by Berry!, July 3, 2011
This review is from: The Next Best Thing (Paperback)
Tori Carter seemed to have the perfect life. She was the senior event coordinator at the most successful event management firm in Kansas City and about to have the wedding of her dreams with the price tag of over $200K. Tori's dream life came to screeching halt when Roland, her fiancé, did not show up at the church and runs off with another woman who happens to be the mother of his secret daughter.

Deidre Berry commanded my attention from the very first page to the last while experiencing Tori's journey. Once she decides to reenter to dating scene, it is filled with horrible dates that provide plenty of laughter. But, one night Tori has dinner with her neighbor Nelson and she begins to wonder if her romantic life will finally turn around.

"The Next Best Thing" is full of humor and the characters are very relatable. I read this book in one sitting. Deidre Berry is definitely the real deal. I look forward to reading more from Berry in what will hopefully be a long career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Destiny, July 14, 2010

This review is from: The Next Best Thing (Paperback)
Tori Carter, a successful event coordinator, understands the importance of always having a back up plan in the event that things don't work out. Unfortunately, for her own wedding, she forgot to make a back up plan. Scuffling, Tori sinks into a mild case of depression as she tries to figure out what's next.

Instead of allowing herself to get lost in a sea of self-pity, Tori decides it would be so much easier to fake it. Sure her heart aches, she loved Roland, her cowardly ex-fiancé, but life goes on. It's not long before she is tossed back in the dating arena, not liking the odds.

Scoffing about the lack of quality dates, Tori and her widowed neighbor, Nelson, realize that they have a ton in common, as neither has found any apt suitors. While Nelson definitely can light a fire, his grief is still boiling, which leaves Tori simmering. Do these two have enough ingredients to make a main course?

THE NEXT BEST THING by Deidre Berry is such a good read. The characters are colorful, the story flows and life just breathes from the pages. I felt every emotion with the characters and I am looking forward to reading other books by this author. This is definitely recommended reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mission Driven by Deidre Berry Fan for Life, November 29, 2009
Tori Carter worked, played and loved hard! Love, lies and alibis did not stop Tori and her best girlfriends from getting it "right". A series of ups and downs, back and forth will captivate you as you turn the page to get to see how things play out. I felt as if I was watching a movie as each and every character came to life in my mind. A Great Story, edgy and not predicatable by any means. The freshman novel The Next Best Thing by Deidre Berry is a Wonderful Read, a Fantastic Voyage with Shock Value and Suspense to Boot. KUDOS to Deidre Berry! <3 The Next Best Thing

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Debut!, August 12, 2009
This review is from: The Next Best Thing (Paperback)
Tori Carter has been jilted on her wedding day. She finds out through a text message from her fiance that his so called platonic friend is actually much more and they have a child together. Tori is devastated, but she is a survivor. Instead of taking off to lick her wounds, she goes back to her high profile job as the senior executive event coordinator for a multi-million dollar company. She also doesn't take much time before she gets back on the dating scene. Tori kept having one bad date after another. After one horrible date, she runs into her neighbor Nelson. They have a great dinner, great conversation, and mind blowing sex. That is until he calls out his deceased wife's name. Tori is back to square one but for some reason she can't seem to let Nelson completely go. After a few more bad dates, she runs into Nelson again and they establish a friendship. Their relationship goes through a few more ups and downs, but in the end they become each others Next Best Thing.

The Next Best Thing is Deidre Berry's debut novel. Berry's writing style flows and is very easy to read. The plot is very well written and thought out. There are several sub-plots that are well developed and work well with the main plot. The secondary characters are also an integral part of the story. The layout of the story is also fresh and adds a unique flare to the novel that helps make you feel like you are a part of the action.

4.0 out of 5 stars Is It Real?, July 1, 2009

This review is from: The Next Best Thing (Paperback)
Event Coordinator Tori Carter has it all, a wonderful job, loving family, friends, the perfect home, and has planned her own storybook wedding. An event she is sure will be the talk Kansas for years to come. Stop! Rewind! Is this a dream or reality?

Berry had my undivided attention from the prologue to the very last page. The humor in which she dealt with each situation was remarkable and one would not know if they should be laughing or crying. The characters in THE NEXT BEST THING were ones you could put the names of your personal friends and family, yet never miss the message while reading.

First time novelist Deidre Berry is truly an author to add to your reading list. Her voice is one the fiction world will be giving thumbs up to for years to come.
