ideas for going beyond 3G wireless, April 13, 2007
This review is from: Next Generation Wireless Systems and Networks (Hardcover)
The book asks what lies beyond the current 3G (or 2.5G) in wireless. Anticipated trends are studied. It is widely believed in this field that a key driver will be ubiquitous and mobile access. The mobile aspect is sometimes termed nomadic.
As a further inducement for new services, the wireless connectivity should seamlessly span a wide range of length scales. From one meter or less (aka. a Personal Access Network), where this might include accessing consumer devices via something like Bluetooth. Longer length scales go into the realm of local area networks and thence into WAN or MAN. The problem is that currently, each is dominated by different technologies, and there is no smooth handoff when going between these scales.
The book explores what might make all this possible. Lots of uncertainties, like the size of the markets and how easy/difficult it might be to get industry consensus on new standards.
A related book that might also be of interest to you is "4G Roadmap and Emerging Communication Technologies" by Y Kim. The material in both texts is roughly the same.
