Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Merle Haggard, Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Ochs, Johnny Cash, Yoko Ono, John Lennon, The Doors, Country Joe McDonald and dozens of other artists including many Vietnam veterans are the tour guides through this enlightening and entertaining journey. Rarely heard documentary material including patriotic Public Service Announcements, field news reports and intercepted North Vietnamese radio transmissions of Jane Fonda and Hanoi Hannah.
The heavily illustrated, full-color 304-page book that accompanies the music is packed with information on the songs and the artists who recorded them by music scholar Hugo A. Keesing; a history of the war by Vietnam historian Lois T. Vietri; and an oral history of the tunes that 'in country' vets loved best by authors Doug Bradley and Craig Werner. The introduction to this remarkable tome is written by the legendary Country Joe McDonald. Strap in for a long and fascinating ride
...NEXT STOP IS VIETNAM is the most comprehensive anthology of music inspired by the Vietnam War ever released.

Memories of the Sixties, Pleasant and Not,

This review is from: Next Stop Is Vietnam - The War On Record, 1961-2008 (13CD+Book) (Audio CD)
"Next Stop Is Vietnam" has all the Vietnam-related songs everybody remembers, ["Where Have All the Flowers Gone", "Ballad of the Green Berets"] plus many that you never heard and may wonder why. It runs the gamut from gungo-ho "pro-war" songs to the sad ballads of soldiers who don't or didn't want to go to war. A big plus is the final CD which has the lyrics to all the songs. The book accompanying gives a lot of information for every song.

Where's Bill Withers?,

This review is from: Next Stop Is Vietnam - The War On Record, 1961-2008 (13CD+Book) (Audio CD)
Where's one of the greatest songs about Vietnam, ever, "I Can't Write Left Handed" by Bill Withers? Major oversight! Maybe they couldn't get copywrite permission; perhaps Creedence and The Animals didn't give permission either, as their great songs here are covers by Paul Revere

So Much is Missing,
This review is from: Next Stop Is Vietnam - The War On Record, 1961-2008 (13CD+Book) (Audio CD)
Thirteen CD's is a ton of stuff. However, there's so many obscure selections here that you don't realize how much is missing until you spend some time remembering the era. Yes, I do go back that far. For instance, I don't see The Association's Requiem For The Masses or Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth. This is a lot of money to pay for an offering that is missing so many important songs from that era.
