Chris Coco - Next Wave, February 22, 2011
Chris Coco ventures out with Next Wave, which starts of promisingly enough with "Falling (G1)." It transposes Satie's "Gymnopedies" into an ambient dub setting, though that has as much to do with Satie as it does with Coco. The album continues in a slow drift of ambience -- be sure you're lying down in a comfortable position before listening. Tracks like "Hazy Lazy" give that dreamy quality a little kick drum. There certainly is an Ibiza vibe running through the album, and I think that it hampers the music somewhat, since Coco seems consciously trying to conform his music to the norm. Even his more recent albums as Coco Steel and Lovebomb didn't follow Ibiza as much as they were simply played in Ibiza. The hype seems to have gotten to him, but he still manages a decent album.

Holy Smoke, This is Bad!, December 30, 2009
And what's worse, I'm a Chris Coco fan! I liked his work with Coco Steel & Lovebomb. The inspiration for a lot of his tunes seems obvious enough with several titles having to do with the sky and beaches. I liked "Sunsets", a heavily sampled song with a samba loop and of course, "Yachts", as remixed by A Man Called Adam, which was popular in the early part of the 2000's. But this one, which I admittedly picked up very late... There was a massive, conglomeration of CD's by the Decadance label (among others) that you'd think had ANYTHING and EVERYTHING good in the impossible-to-classify genre called 'chill-out'. But often times, you might have the typical popular song by, say, Zero-7 only to have 4-5 other songs of some of the most boring, monotonous tracks you'd ever heard. It's a little harsh but I really did feel that way when listening to this album. Maybe the mood was supposed to be ambient, but in terms of electronic and ambiance, it just isn't too good. Looking for a redeeming song... Back to Nature - the first 1:45, is actually calming. And Albatross finally delivers much more creativity and layers and offers the atmosphere and mood that they were probably searching for. But getting to those songs, which would include getting through the first 12 trakcs may be a challenge beyond most. I can't recommend getting this entire album. Look for a few individual songs here if you're perhaps looking to create a playist, as "Albatross" really is the redeeming song here and lifts the rating to 2 stars. "Only Love" peaked my interest as I heard it on an old Hedkandi album years ago - but I didn't necessarily like it then either. As for the rest of the tracks go - Chris Coco's produced and been a part of far better material & I'd recommend looking for those instead. If you DO however enjoy this, you would probably really like the Brazil 5000 series which has a remarkably similar vibe (volumes 2-5). Otherwise, don't break the bank for this one.

A Near Miss Worth Having, January 20, 2003
This review is from: Next Wave (Audio CD)
I like Chris Coco. He contributed to DJ magazine and his reviews were always something you could count on. He also has a fine ear for more laidback, chillout type music. This album comes very close to being the perfect headphone listening experience or accompaniment for sunsets (or sunrises for that matter!). The album gets off to a great start with "Falling", but the start of "All of My Beautiful Friends" is too much for me (the last parts of the song are actually quite good) and "Hazy Lazy" and "My Sunset" are a little too repetitive for my tastes. The rest of the album is to be highly recommended though. Many ambient tunes "Only Love," "Back to Nature," and "Albatross (pretty guitar work by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac)" are quite nice. "Lost Angels" and "Gemini" are standout tracks. "1975 E. Sunrise Blvd" is pretty much a purely descriptive title. My favorite is "Revolution" which has the highest BPM on the album. Overall, this is a superb effort and well worth those moments that it is the perfect soundtrack for - sunsets, Sunday mornings, and small parties with close friends.
