A Gem of a Book!,

This review is from: Next Week When I'm Big (Hardcover)
This is one of the most delightful children's books I've come across in years. The words are whimsical and playful and the illustrations are perfection! The author and illustrator have taken a common, simple concept and turned it into a gem that I'm sure will delight children, parents and teachers for years!

Next Week When I'm Big is an easy-reader picturebook about a little girl who dreams of exciting and exotic things she can do when she grows bigger. But her concepts of careers and activities are a little mixed up! "Next week when I'm big / I'm going to be a trapezoid artist / or maybe / a whale singer / and a sorter / of the M&M's. / But every week, / I'm going to be / a bundle of joy." The outlandish color pictures match the starry-eyed mood of the simple story, in this unique and whimsical tale.

At first glance, the book is a colorful combination of text, collage and illustration. It is a real treat for the eyes, colors bouncing of the page. What is most interesting about this book is that each illustration goes beyond the text and makes a child think and question. On one page she is presented with m and m's, no, not to eat, but to collect and to differentiate each color and to appropriate it to a specific space on the page. This book is full of goodies! |
