5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, Ethereal, Hauntingly beautiful album..., July 19, 2005

This is my absolute FAVORITE album of Sarah Fimm's. This album is so beautiful. Sarah is the perfect blend of Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos and Daughter Darling. Her soothing and ethereal vocals are so mezmerizing that once you put this cd in, it is hard to focus on anything other than her singing. The trip-hop influenced beats mesh well with Sarah's voice. This is definetly Sarah's most somber and elegant album. The music is all very lush and sad. My favorite songs are Walk Away, December, Orchids, Paradise, Be What You Wanna Be, Losing Velocity, Strange and Mercury. This is by far the BEST album I have purchased in a while. I am shocked at how beautiful it is! Do not pass up buying this...you will regret it!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic, November 8, 2004
This review is from: Nexus (Audio CD)
Hypnotic electronica-tinged piano balladry, with soft, beautiful vocals and instropective lyrics that hint at post 9/11 angst. Sarah Fimm has a perfect, downtempo soundtrack for the post-election blues. Perfect for fans of Tori Amos or Happy Rhodes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing album, October 3, 2005

Vocally she's like a blend of Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, and something else. Lyrics are uniformily excellent, except for the slightly mediocre "Sky Is Falling Down", which seems too much like high-school poetry.

The following songs are just amazing from the standpoint of composition, lyrics, singing:

Losing Velocity
Mercury
Story of Us
Strange
Nexus
Be What You Wanna Be
Paradise
December

When was the last time a singer-songwriter issued out an album with 8 really great songs? The last I remember was Sarah McLachlan's 1997 magnum opus Surfacing. This may be Sarah Fimm's magnum opus, I don't see how she'll top this work, but given her age, she should have another great album in her. I'm surprised she's not gone multi-platinum yet. It just goes to show how important timing is, had this been released in 1998, she would have been a superstar. In the current music market, I don't know what you have to do to sell millions other then whore out like Brittney, Christina, etc..

This is a great cd!! I highly recommend this to anyone who likes alternative music. I heard her song "story of us" on the radio and just had to buy her cd, and it is worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful, haunting, February 8, 2005

I recently purchased this cd and loved it from the first listen. It sucks you right in and even though it's a long cd, I never feel ready for it to end when it does. I've probably listened to it every day since receiving it. Sarah's music makes you want to close your eyes, turn it up and float away...

5.0 out of 5 stars Tori's more modern sister, January 27, 2005

I think I first heard of Sarah Fimm via Amazon. What's more when I decided to buy her latest album I couldn't make an order for it from Hungary so an American friend of mine ordered it for me. Well, it was worth the wait & the effort. Being a big Tori Amos fan I instantly fell in love with Sarah's music. I'm not saying that it is very similar but certainly there are some "Tori feeling" throughout the album. It's just more "modern" - I mean she uses programming that actually makes the music very fresh. At times, this approach make the music work "better" than the almost constant piano in Tori's sometimes too "conservative" song-building method.

Sometimes I even felt a resemblance in the music the Caroline Lavelle's brilliant "Brilliant Midnight" - which also has some electronica in it.

Although a bit slow at times (no really "upbeat" songs), this album definitely made me a new fan of Sarah Fimm.

5.0 out of 5 stars beauty and the beats, April 16, 2006

Found this quite by accident and whilst i don't like to compare artists, think Sarah Mclachlans remixes,Ben Folds piano, and some of the best lyrics I've heard in a while..oh stunning.Track 9,"Be what you wanna be" would have to be my favourite, but that is like trying to pick a gem from a pile of gems. The production of the whole album is stunning, and I have to award "Best Bass Player of the Week'to Peter Geraghty, subtle, understated but so powerfull.Sarahs piano playing is so there, you listen to it yet her voice draws you in,I can't imagine one without the other. Thanks sarah for making this album, and if anyone is listening,I'd like her next one for xmas, thats a long wait for "December"(a track that will make you emotional, but what will make you cry is not owning this album!!)can't recomend Nexus highly enough.Metta.

5.0 out of 5 stars Her best work yet, February 21, 2006

I've been a fan for a while of Sarah Fimm, but this cd was her best so far. Not only has her voice improved, but the production on each of the songs is way smoother. If you want some good music with a beautiful voice and heart-turning lyrics, this is the way to go!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best from 2004, still great, December 25, 2009
This review is from: Nexus (Audio CD)
This CD is a little sombre but ethereal and quite beautiful. My favourite is "Great Wide Open",a hopeful song with many layers of sound. I also love "Mercury" which has piano, acoustic drums and electric bass mixed with electronica. I like that Sarah doesn't jam too many words in her songs, so that there is a spaciousness to this recording. There is a breathy quality to her vocals and she doesn't push them too hard. There is lots to discover on this recording and yet it doesn't take very long to grow on you. This is a gem that more people should know about.
