5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing DVD Player and Feature Packed
Update, February 2007, one year later... We have FIVE of these running here with never a problem. Now, they do not get rough use and are not in constant use, but they have ALWAYS worked perfectly for our needs, which are, several TVs scattered about the house, each with one of these units attached.

I recently bought two of these...

1.0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE TRASH
I've been trying to find a proper dvd player to play DVDs from the UK, and I tried this one out. After using it 5 times, the dvd player stopped working. I hope that no one ever buys this one because I would not want anyone to go trough the trouble I've been going through with this piece of junk.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for Multiregion, but has known hardware issue, November 26, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nexxtech EDP3110 Progressive Scan DVD Player with MP3 and Kodak Picture Playback (Electronics)
If you are looking for a multi region DVD player, this one does work great. (I purchased it to see some British DVDS purchased from amazon.co.uk).

The code listed on this dvd player description DOES work. You might have to change the settings to NTSC output only for your television, but that will depend on your equipment.

Now the reason I rated it 3 stars vs 5 stars -

I purchased the unit about 1 1/2 months ago and only used it in a limited basis. I had turned it off with an audio CD in it about a week or two ago. When I went to go use the DVD player again this morning, it would NOT eject my disc. (It would play the disc.) With repeated on and off attempted, unplugging it twice, it still was locked. There is NO emergency eject hole like on MOST computer CD drives.

I called Nexxtech expecting to get told they are closed on a Saturday morning (and this being the Saturday after Thanksgiving!). I got a technician on the phone after about a 5-10 minute wait. I explained the problems and he gave me the solution of tapping the unit on the side to try to get it open. I had to tap the bottom and the tray did open. He did mention that he gets about 3 calls a day with this same exact known issue.

The tech support answering gets 5 Stars, the equipment due to known bug is getting a very generous 3 stars (and that is because the multiregion DOES work and the DVD player, other than the one error, works fine.)

Also, some advice from the same tech - place it on a known flat surface, NOT an angle.

==================

I recently bought two of these DVD players. I needed a couple of units that worked well, but did not want to invest a lot in two additional DVD players. However, I did not want junk... I did a lot of looking on the Internet and User Groups for reasonably priced DVD players that seemed a good gamble. Often more money does not always buy more quality, just better marketing tactics. The features for the NexXtech EDP3110 Progressive Scan DVD Player were quite impressive, particularly in this price range. The reviews I found on the Internet ranged from 2/3's extremely impressed to 1/3 completely disappointed. I didn't know what to attribute this to... quality control, a batch of bad units, rough shipping, a poorly designed/made unit, need for engineering improvements or what... However, given a number of great reviews and the features, I decided to try the NexXtech EDP3110.

I have been extraordinarily impressed so far with the NexXtech EDP3110. I have been trying it for several days now. First, the unit is extremely slick looking in terms of profile, color choice, overall appearance, and lack of clutter. And I am also amazed that the case is all metal and not flimsy. The remote is ultra-light and very well designed for functionality and range. The tray mechanism works smoothly, and overall the functionality of the entire unit is amazing. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE that a "special" programming sheet came with my units that allows one to program it to play "any" DVD format, worldwide. This programming is not in the manual. If you want this unit to play various worldwide DVD formats, anyplace, you need to be sure you have followed "exactly" these special setup programming directions. My two units came from North Star Electronics via Amazon.com and the special programming sheet was included. It you search the Internet, these special programming features are discussed on a number of sites. However, these instructions are accomplished by entering a code via the remote control to open the region-free feature. Using only the remote control do the following: open tray, then press on the remote, stop-2-3-7-9, press arrow down until 0, then press OK.

So far, everything is working perfectly. I should also note that the manual is extremely well written. Also, you will not need to spend hours reading the manual to get the unit completely setup and working. Now, I do need to say I am using a straight forward setup, playing US DVDs on a NTSC US TV. I played with the various features and the unit responded, so I have no doubt it should work with more feature packed TVs, wide screen, etc. However, for the low low price, it is worth a try. I also have only played US DVDs, so I can not comment on worldwide functionality. Given my experiences with this unit, I have no reason to believe it does not work exactly as advertised in the NexXtech literature.

In searching the groups (maybe here) I did come up with a hint. Apparently on some units (maybe all) the DVD tray might once in a while not respond for the CD tray to come out. Someone had called NexXtech Technical Support and the technician said sometimes this might happen, and to tap gently under the CD tray on the bottom of the DVD player, or the side of the DVD player. This individual said this fix worked fine and this problem only RARELY occurs and should not be a concern if you know the simple fix if it even occurs. Over the past couple of days I have had the tray in and out numerous times with never a problem, not even the slightest problem. Maybe it has been fixed in later units shipped?

Well, my recommendation is the NexXtech EDP3110 Progressive Scan DVD Player IS A DEFINITE BUY if you are looking for something like this. I am truly amazed, absolutely amazed. I have no idea how I will feel several months or a couple of years from now with reliability and all, but for now based on first impressions, and having a professional technical background and education, I can only say I am highly impressed and the low price is even more amazing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Definitley multi-region friendly, October 17, 2005
This review is from: Nexxtech EDP3110 Progressive Scan DVD Player with MP3 and Kodak Picture Playback (Electronics)
The code to make this product region-free/multi-regional definitley works and lets you play a DVD from a different region. However, when i sat down to watch an English DVD the picture was in black and white. I then tried this on another TV in our apartment and the picture definitley got more entertaining. It was black and white and the picture was off center and scrolling down the screen.

If you want a cheap DVD player to play-back your US DVD's then this product will definitley suit your needs. If you are like me and want to have a DVD player that plays back DVD's from different regions then i certainly advise you to stay clear of this product.

I purchased one of these on Amazon in September for only $39.98. Now the Amazon price lists @ $97.98, dynamic pricing? Anyway, neither of the reviews posted were very complimentary and I wanted to voice a success story.

After years of searching I finally found a copy of Wim Wenders "Until the End of the World" movie on DVD. When I finally found one, it was an extended cut taking the 3hour theatrical version to 5+ hours. Down side, it's a German release and only available in PAL. Since I spent over $50 to get the DVD I figured I could toss $40 bucks on a chance to be able to play the movie on something other than my PC.

The remote is small and simple. The player is thin, not overly rugged. The disk tray could be broken off easily by a toddler or ambitious dog, but it has full component outputs, and when hooked up to the component inputs to my 16:9 TV with the Unlock code provided in the product description (Open tray, press on the remote, stop-2-3-7-9, press arrow down until 0, then press OK.), it played back the PAL movie beautifully. It fully supported the surround sound, and it has offered no difficulty with my regular NTSC collection either. Color reproduction has been fine with both PAL and NTSC discs. With the unlock code entered once; it has automatically sensed and played back any disk I've put in it with no additional adjustments needed.

I may have gotten lucky, or perhaps there is an issue using a composite (single video cable) output, since I have component inputs I've had no reason to play around with those options. I don't know what kind of lifespan to expect from this device, but it's has been trouble free for two months thus far. For what I paid, if it died tomorrow, I'd still feel I got my monies worth.

2.0 out of 5 stars Skips, and won't eject disc., April 16, 2006
By
This review is from: Nexxtech EDP3110 Progressive Scan DVD Player with MP3 and Kodak Picture Playback (Electronics)
This player has a habit of skipping on DVDs old and new. I often have to jump to the next scene entirely to get past the skipping. Now I have a DVD stuck in the machine because, as others have noted, it refuses to eject.

Worked for a while, but I am completely unsatisfied and have had a very difficult time getting support from Nexxtech.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it, January 24, 2006

This review is from: Nexxtech EDP3110 Progressive Scan DVD Player with MP3 and Kodak Picture Playback (Electronics)
I bought this item and when I plugged it in for the first time and got it all hooked up I realized that it would not open to let me put my DVD in. I even tried it on other TV's in my house and nothing would get that thing to be opened.

It sounds like it worked in the beginning for the other people that reviewed this product. But it seems as if getting it to work is like flipping a coin. I would not recommend this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I'd hoped..., December 7, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nexxtech EDP3110 Progressive Scan DVD Player with MP3 and Kodak Picture Playback (Electronics)
Does what it claims, and has a good amount of outputs - which is what are usually lacking from a lower-priced DVD player. From this standpoint, it's very good.

The not-so-good are:

* It's a bit finicky about playing DVDs. Sometimes, they skip when there are no visible scratches, defects or dirt. If you eject and restart the disc without any attention, it will then often work fine. It is also very sensitive if there is dirt or scratches, compared to my other DVD player.

* The remote is poorly designed. Want to move forward within a chapter, you have to hold down the same button that skips to the next chapter. This often causes you to accidentally skip back a chapter when you just wanted to watch something again. Consider that the remote will best be replaced by a universal remote.

* The player is a bit slow to load, read discs. Not too bad, but slower than other players.

Other than these complaints, it's fine. I'm relatively satisfied with my purchase, but would not by another.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad product, November 10, 2006
This review is from: Nexxtech EDP3110 Progressive Scan DVD Player with MP3 and Kodak Picture Playback (Electronics)
When I received this product, it was defective. I also had an extremely difficult time getting my return processed. It was almost a month before I saw my return credited to my account. I had to write numerous emails to get it accomplished. I do use Amazon for many purchases and this was the only time i wasn't satisfied.

We had held off buying other region DVDs while on vacation for the last several years. NO more! This player is incredible! It is a sleek good looking unit that works as well as our Sony units. It was so very easy to set up as code free (instructions included) that we were playing "Flash Gordon" Region 2 in 3 minutes flat after plugging in the unit. It includes the video converter that switches automatically from the PAL on the DVD to the NTSC that our moniters utilize. At this price point - a true WINNER!
