My Primary Reference For Years, November 30, 2009
For anyone into deep sky observing, this book should be a mandatory addition to your library. For years it was my primary source of data on all of the NGC and IC objects. Today, the pages are well-worn as an indication of how much I used it.
Nowadays, I tend to use Megastar more for my data as it is more up-to-date. I find especially that the object magnitudes differ from NGC-2000 to what Emil Bonanno comprehensively researched and updated for his Megastar.
This is not a reading book, to be sure. There are maybe 15 pages of text at the beginning to introduce the data, and the rest of the book consists of lists of every NGC and IC object. Each entry provides not only the number and position, but the magnitudes (if known) and size.
Sure, there are more modern catalogues available but this one is still a great primary source of data. It may have a few errors based on the latest data, but it is still a great basic source, especially if you are creating a database of your observations. When I created my observing database based on Microsoft Access back in the 90's, NGC-2000 was my ONLY reference. Though I tend to rely more on Megastar for the latest data these days, NGC-2000 still gets used a lot, especially for cross-referencing and resolving discrepancies between catalogues. Highly recommended.
