Product Description

The Niagara Cutter CB430 TiAlN-coated carbide ball nose end mill has four flutes and a 30-degree helix angle for general-purpose machining on a range of materials. The tool’s ball nose creates contoured surfaces where sharp corners are not required, and the center-cutting design has cutting teeth at the end of the tool, so it can be fed into the workpiece like a drill bit. Four flutes produce a better finish than fewer flutes. The 30-degree helix angle supports general-purpose applications. It balances lower angles’ strong cutting edge for difficult-to-machine materials with higher angles’ increased cutting action.

The TiAlN coating resists heat better than TiN and TiCN coatings, increasing tool life and performance. It also offers increased hardness for abrasion resistance and may reduce the need for lubricants based on the application. (TiAlN is suitable for a range of materials, but TiCN or uncoated end mills are recommended for machining aluminum.) The carbide substrate is harder than high-speed or cobalt steel, making it more wear resistant at high speeds and providing longer tool life. Cutting diameter tolerance is +0.000” to -0.002”. The round shank accommodates a variety of holders.

End mills are designed to remove material and create multi-dimensional shapes and profiles. They have cutting edges along the outside diameter and flutes that remove chips from the cutting area and allow cooling fluids to enter. If heat is not reduced effectively, the tool’s cutting edges will dull and additional material buildup can occur. The number of flutes can range from two to eight. Two-flute designs offer the most efficient chip removal, but more flutes provide a smoother finish. The shank is the end of the tool held in place by a tool holder or machine. Center-cutting end mills can create three-dimensional shapes and profiles, and make plunge cuts similar to a drill bit. Non-center-cutting end mills are for applications such as peripheral milling and finishing, but cannot make plunge cuts.

I have a couple of rotary tools and enjoy carving with them, however, the majority of burrs and cutters for them leave a lot to be desired so I decided to give some carbide ball end mills a try. Best decision I ever made with regard to these tools. The end mills I like are 4 flute and small to very small. These cutters give an extraordinary cut quality compared to what are generally sold as rotary tool cutters. These are extremely sharp, precise and cut cleaner than anything else. Of course this is not what these mills are meant for, which is a pity. If more people knew of these cutters, wood engravers all over would be a lot happier.

I have been able to draw detailed organic and geometric shapes and replicate them very cleanly with these cutters, either freehand or using a mini router base with my Proxxon. The level of precision is really good because these cutters don't try to wander too much. Having four sharp flutes and a round tip put these cutters in a class of their own for wood engraving/carving.

If you want high feed rate, no deeper than half the width!! If you want a deep cut, prepare to go very slow!! I'm not meaning this as a bad thing, but it will not tolerate mistakes and will snap off with a great deal of ease. Watch your feed rate and depth and the cutter is wonderful to work with. Excellent chip ejection and appears to hold its edge well.

Very few end mills this thin have such a long cutting length so this is one of those tools you absolutely need in your toolbox but it also demands a great deal of respect.

Broke after 1/2 of a second of use. After it broke I was able to chuck just the ball end of the piece that broke off in my CNC...that broke in about 2 seconds. I would encourage anyone looking at this to spend your money else where and get a better quality bit. This is junk.

This bit is junk. I purchased it because I wanted the extra length for my cnc..My other bits only have an OL of 1 1/2 to 2 inches. And a cutting length of anywhere from 3/16 to 1/2. I was planning on doing a 3-d carving and would need to the extra length for the board. I use a lot of 1/16 to 1/8 ball nose bits..And when I run those bits, I use an FRO of 15-20% and a step over of 8, which is way less than half the bit diameter..This junk didn't even get that far..I was going to test it out on a piece of poplar..FRO was set at 20% and as soon as the bit touched the board it snapped..None of my other bits with those diameters running on these settings have any issues...Will definitely not be buying anymore of this garbage..
