Perfect for regional California history collections,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nicasio (Images of America: California) (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) (Paperback)
The 'Images of America' series expands with more regional guides based on archival photos public and private. Anne M. Papina's NICASIO (0738558028) surveys a Marin County outpost that even today is little-known to many. From pioneers and their establishment of The Rancho Nicasio to modern scenes, NICASIO is a fine celebration. Drawings, maps, and vintage black and white photos make this powerful visual presentation perfect for regional California history collections.

This book is one of the most interesting reads I've had in quite a while. If you are a fan of small town life in the early 20th century, this book will make you feel as if you were there.
The author doesn't make the mistake that so many do, by focusing on the highlights and overly popular moments. Instead she shows the true side of life in a small town with such a rich history. There is nothing cold or clinical about the way this book is put together. True, it does tell a story of the events occurring in the world at that time, but it tells the story from the human experience. You can just feel what it must have been like in this incredible little town. The descriptions with each picture and accompanying stories will remind you of those Sunday afternoon barbecues where Grandma used to tell the kids what the world was like when she was a child. It is evident the author paid attention and I can just imagine sitting there wide eyed, hanging on every word. Until someone figures out how to take me back in time to experience the real Nicasio, this book is an outstanding substitute. |
