This review is from: A Nice Place to Live (Paperback)
The Marinos flee the urban blight of New York City and move to the other island, Long Island. Nick, Cristine, and their son Joey, find peace and harmony in a beach community on the north shore where it seems everyone owns a boat, except them. Alas, their peace and harmony is shattered when they return from a party at their neighbor's and find their dog, Sleazy, decapitated. Then Nick seems to be spending a lot of time at their neighbor's pool listening to the beautiful and enchanting Karla, the neighbor's daughter, sing songs with her ultra clear, and messmerizing voice. But something has changed in Nick. He has become moody, and sullen, not at all his usual happy go lucky self. In fact, he has become abusive towards Christine, and distant to his son. Then Christine's alcoholic aunt, Henrietta, arrives on the scene to add a little much needed humor to the mix. And things go steadily downhill from there for the Marinos. There's a terrible beast lurking aoutside in the woods. A beast that can not only decapatate dogs (one being a full grown Great Dane!). But also a horse! Literally tearing them apart, limb from limb, and leaving them bloodless. no it's not another vampire story. Oh no. Not at all. It's something else. Something that makes Dracula seem like a welcomed guest! It's a...no, I'd better not tell you. That would spoil all the fun and make me a Troll.

I found this book to be rather fun, and though the characters are a bit two dimesional, I must say that the story moved right along and held my interest until the very end. There were some nice twists along the way, and after I finished it, I said right out loud to my dogs, 'See, that's what happens to bad dogs.', they knew just what I was saying, too, but I also said right out loud, 'that was a fun book'. And it was, in fact, it made me want to read more by Rrobert C. Sloane. And after all is said and done, I suppose that is what every author wishes for, when they put pen to paper, or keyboard to screen.
