My favorite children's book ever!!!!!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Be Nice to Spiders (Library Binding)
This book taught me to not be afraid of spiders and it is such a good book for kids. A little boy gives his spider to the zoo because the apartment he is moving to doesn't allow pets. Next you will read about all the things that happen to his spider in the zoo. All in all, a great children's book.

Childhood Favorite,
By A Customer
This review is from: Be Nice to Spiders (Library Binding)
This book was a childhood favorite, after 30 years the story of the spider and all the good he did for the zoo has stuck with me. It has all the elements to keep a child interested and to teach good valuable lessons. It is easy reading for a child, I think both boys and girls will enjoy it.

Very useful book,

I really liked this book because it really helps people understand what most people do not understand, the spider. It shows people that spiders can be useful and should not be harmed. I thought it was really great when the people in the zoo and the zookeeper found out that it was Helen that were keeping the animals healthy and made the rule to be nice to spiders.

Billy is moving to an apartment that doesn't allow pets, so he leaves his beloved spider Helen at the zoo, where she promptly improves everyone's lives by eating all those annoying flies. Things are great until the head of the zoo sends out a misguided order to clean up the zoo --including those spider webs. This is a great book about unexpected and mutually beneficial relationships, and is good for bug lovers and haters alike.
First printed in 1967, this book's illustrations have a definite vintage feel to them.

A NICE SPIDER BOOK,
This review is from: Be Nice to Spiders (Weekly Reader Children's Book Club Presents) (Hardcover)
Read this one to my kids and now grandchildren. A book which shows that spiders are indeed nice and useful creatures. A story told of a spider who lives in the zoo and the good done by that spider. I note that children love this book and a a matter of fact I am rather fond of it also. Highly recommend this one.

Super book!,

A cute story about a spider named Helen who goes to live at the zoo. I loved this book because it shows how the creatures that some people tend not to like - spiders for instance - are often very helpful! We are big bug lovers here (we have many species as pets) and this was a story that touched our hearts. You'll want to get this for anyone who loves bugs. Even better, get it for someone who wants to stomp on them to give them a better perspective!

A Lifelong Lesson,

I remember reading this book to my daughters who are now in their late 20's and early 30's! I've enjoy remembering how helpful Helen and her children were to those around them. I see myself now, even, trying not to harm a spider or their magnificent webs on the front porch or a bedding plant in the garden. My grandson enjoyed watching the web grow and grow last summer on our front porch and was disappointed when a storm destroyed it. :^(

Appreciate all creatures,

This review is from: Be Nice to Spiders (Hardcover)
Like most little kids, I always chased after all sorts of small insects. They were one of the few things I was bigger than at the time! After my grandmother caught me chasing daddy long legs, she read "Be Nice to Spiders" to me. Then I discovered that I disliked flies more than spiders, so I left the spiders alone. It is amazing how a book can make such a large impact on a child. This is an adorable story which teaches children to appreciate all creatures (except flies) no matter how small and unimportant they may seem.

I purchased this book for my son when he was 3 because he was very bug-phobic. I don't expect him to grow up to be an entomologist, but having him not run away when he sees an ant (or spider) would be nice!
This book was recommended to me by a friend because it was her favorite book growing up. It tells the story of Helen the spider trying to make a new home in the zoo because her boy Jimmy moved to an apartment that didn't accept pets. Helen tries to live in many different animal habitats, but the zoo keepers don't like her webs and want her out. Eventually, the zoo keepers see all the good spiders do (catching all the the flies that annoy the other animals and make them unhappy). It has a lovely happy ending which, unlike Charlotte's Web, doesn't make the heroine die at the end just because she has babies. After reading this book (many times), when my son and I were outside and he saw a spider, he still was not happy. But then I reminded him that the spider could be one of Helen's babies and he was much less afraid! It's a great book for any kids that likes animals. Many different kinds of animals are in the book because of the zoo.

A spider's work is never finished.,

Helen the spider finds herself a new home at the zoo. She finds plenty of flies to eat. It's too bad the zookeeper doesn't realize that her presence is a benefit to all the animals to the zoo. It's almost too late when the zookeeper finally acknowledges the need to take care of Helen because of her valuable work.
I remember my mother reading this Weekly Reader Children's Book Club book to me as a child. I have always remembered to "be nice to spiders." This is a fun little tale to keep kids looking for the value of small things in life. |
