Soulful sounds from Germany,
By Lelar Norton (Stuttgart Germany) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nicht Von Dieser Welt (Audio CD)
I first visited Germany in 1999 and I heard his album "Nicht Von Dieser Welt". I bought the album and I have not been disappointed. I have since returned now 3 more times and each time I come here, he has a new single. I don't know the name of his latest album, but I purchased it last week and it wonderful. He even has some English titles on this new album. I was not aware that he had a LIVE album, but I am sure to look for it. I really hope that he will record an English album. It would be a disgrace that the US would not be able to hear this soulful, magnificent voice. He is truly amazing. He also performed at a free concert and again, this guy can really sing. I don't speak a word of German, but I would love to know what he is saying, but that doesn't really matter; you will fall in love with his music anyway.

German soul! This is not America.,
By
This review is from: Nicht Von Dieser Welt (Audio CD)
One of the most rewarding experiences about collecting music is listening to each country duplicate "soul" music. The UK did it with Simply Red. Germany is attempting with Xavier Naidoo and the disc at hand, "Nicht Von Dieser Welt." Xavier is blessed with a wonderful voice. The man can sing! However, there is something to be said about HOW he uses his voice. He deserves credit for making German (that wonderfully gutteral language) into something truly beautiful. But never once does he seem to sing anything longer than a half-note. Does the man have pipes? Yes, he can belt it out, but a lot of the phrasing sounds like a showoff trying to sing the national anthem. Wobbling through thirds, octaves, and who else knows what. But make no mistake, it is a beautiful album and songs like "Seid Ihr Mit Mir?", "20,000 Meilen," "Flugzeuge Im Bauch (an excellent soulful cover of Herbert Groenemeyer's classic cut)," and the title track. There is also a wonderful rendition of Bowie/Methany's "This Is Not America" which not only serves as an update, but a reminder--this is Deutsche soul. This is not America. Traditionally flawless 3P production is--flawless. While Xavier never ventures into rap (achtung!), there are guest appearances by fellow labelmates Illmatic and Sabrina Setlur. Unfortunately, their prescence only succeeds in marring the soothing, soulful atmosphere set by Xavier and the band (particularly on "Eigentlich Gut," the rappers are out of place and annoying). And yes, at times the heavy drum machine seems more appropriate for the Cash Money Millionaires than this wonderful singer. Make no mistake--despite imperfections, this really is a wonderful CD and a fascinating excursion into German soul. (! )

Einfach Ausgezeichnet,

This is the album that put Xaiver Naidoo on the map in Germany, Europe, and smatterings of other places on the planet. It has been six years since the release of this record, and things have obviously changed in Xavier's life (not the least of which is his relationship with his production team led by Moses Pelham). You do NOT need to speak German to appreciate this music, but it definitely helps. This is especially true of his double album follow-up to this release "Alles Fuer den Herrn" which is a truly exceptional work. The reason is that the things that Xavier says are important. But it depends who you ask. There is a considerable amount of religious imagery in Xavier's music, both overt and covert. This can turn off quite a few people, especially in a place like Germany, but it is an accurate reflection of Xavier's Afro-American musical roots. I've even had discussions with (white) Germans who do not consider Xavier's music "German" because of the way he looks and the way he sings. Go figure. Xavier just continues to sing about it. Great record by a guy who surely at some point will conquer America.

Last summer I heard this CD in Germany. Since then, it has remained in my CD player. He at least attempts to have a message in his music and I'll admit he has a great voice. I would recommend this CD to people who don't understand german as well as those who do. Er entaeuscht Sie nicht.

Wonderful music!,

This is one of the best albums I ever heard. Xavier has a beautiful voice, I get goosebumps hearing him every time. Okay, so I am a native German and understand what he sings about... I have forced more than one of my friends in the States to listen to Xavier though, and though they didn't understand him, they still loved him. His voice expresses what he feels, so you don't necessarily have to understand the words. My favorites are Sag Es Laut and Flugzeuge im Bauch, which is not a Oli P. cover, the original version of the song was a hit by German singer/songwriter Herbert Grönemeyer. Xavier did the song justice, unlike Oli P. Anyway, I think what I'm trying to say is this: If you love good music, this CD is for you. And it proves that German music is about much more than the oomphta Oktoberfest tunes everybody knows.

This is the future of R & B,

I first heard Xavier Naidoo on Deutche Welle T.V. The song was "Nicht Von Dieser Welt."I don't know much german(10 words). It wasn't nessesary. The shear power and ability of this man trancends all language. His ability to create a mood through music and voice is on point. While other(U.S.)artists waste time trying to duplicate each other.Xavier steps up with something that is truly original!Working fresh down tempo hip/hop beatsand original musical arrangements that support his voice not cloud it.I'm anxious to hear whats next from Mr Naidoo. His voice is smooth and expressive with a nod to 60's-70's American R&B.To compare him to another singer would do him a great disservice. ( Let's just say DeAngelo wishes he sounds like this!)I've played this for several friends(some of whom don't even like R&B)and they all were amazed and impressed! His live cd(where you at cdnow?)shows this man can hold his own and is destine for global stardom! If he is denyed you will all be subjected to copycat moneygrabberz for all eternity.Don't get lost man!

I too heard of Xavier Naidoo on line. I must say that his music has completely captivated me. I'm a black American and I don't speak any German,( with the exception of causal greetings) yet, I find his music to be almost anointed and refreshing. I promise you, his music will appeal to all! Particularly if you're eclectic. Brief, is so soothing yet powerful. I also love his work with Manhiem Sohn, sp?? Please if anyone knows a site that gives the translation of his music, or if he'll be in the U.S.A, please let me know ...There are many people here in the states who would love to see him.

By
This review is from: Nicht Von Dieser Welt (Audio CD)
i am an american living overseas...if r&b doesn't go in this direction, it does itself a great disservice...this is some of the best r&b i've heard in many, many years...his voice is enchanting, the music is rhythmic, the lyrics -whether you understand them or not- are poignant...
well done, xavier... |
