This lantern is very rugged and produces enough light for most sedentary outdoor activities.

The lantern has four modes: high (300 lumens), medium (150 lumens), low (29 lumens), and SOS flashing (where the lantern flashes "SOS" in Morse code: three short, three long, and three short). By contrast, the Rayovac Sportsman LED Lantern (SE3DLN) has only high (240 lumens), low (100 lumens), and strobe modes. For those who are used to lighting up a room with three 60-watt incandescent bulbs that emit 800 lumens each, the lantern isn't going to be insanely bright. However, the lantern compares favorably with similar lanterns and provides sufficient light for conversation, card playing, and searches for dropped objects. You can even read a book without being particularly close to the lantern. Low mode is enough light to find your way to the restroom without disturbing sleeping companions.

The light is produced by three main LEDs in the globe. There are also eleven smaller LEDs on the front around the switch: one green LED flashes every three seconds when the lantern is off, and ten amber LEDs indicate the relative brightness when the lantern is on. All ten amber LEDs are on when the lantern is on high (300 lumens), five amber LEDs are on when the lantern is on medium (150 lumens), and one amber LED is on when the lantern is on low (29 lumens). The amber LEDs are off when the lantern is on SOS flashing mode. The green LED itself can't be seen except from a narrow range of angles, but if you set the lantern close to a vertical surface (for example, a tent wall) and aim the green LED at the vertical surface, the reflected light is much more broadly visible.

The lantern seems to be made out of rugged, heavy ABS plastic, and the top and base are encased in rubber.

I really like this item!

I have been using an old Coleman (gas) lantern for many years as a light source for camping and power outages. This little thing is really nifty! Lighter in weight, I don't have to use or haul expensive and heavy Coleman fuel, no mantles to break or replace, plenty of good quality light and long battery life at lower settings. Also no high temperature operation so no accidental burns! The only "downside" is it will not heat my tent for winter camping!

So a safer, low weight, long lasting and usuable light source! The only improvement would be to offer them free!

This is a solid, well built lantern. The base is rubber coated and everything about it is robust. I'm impressed! D cell lights seem to be among the less popular, but provide the most and longest lasting light per dollar spent in batteries, I gave this one a shot and have no regrets at all.

I have a Coleman Pack Away Silver LED Lantern that I bought several years ago for camping and for around the house when the power goes out. When I bought the Coleman a few years ago, I thought it was decent since it was one of the few LED lanterns available, but the more I use it, the more disappointed I have been. It is dim, somewhat bulky, does not distribute the light very well, and the collapsible design isn't very good, causing the light to flicker.

After a 12 hour power outage recently, I got fed up with the Coleman and read the Amazon reviews for other LED lanterns. I looked at the Rayovac model (similar to this Nichia) and then I saw the Nichia with the glowing reviews. From what I could tell, it is the same design as the Rayovac and looks identical, but has an additional brightness level, and is much brighter. I bought two of these to have around the house, and to have on hand for future camping.

This Nichia lantern is excellent. It's crazy bright, the three brightness levels are very convenient, and it's solid and rugged. It seems very well designed and built. The handle on the top, hook on the bottom for hanging, and removable top make it much better than any other lantern I've used. And the 3 D battery design allows it to be more compact and slightly lighter.

The only minor design element that concerns me is that the battery cover on the bottom seems like it could be designed to twist on more securely. As soon as I twist the bottom battery cover slightly, it seems to pop right off due to the spring pressure from the batteries. So if it were bumped hard enough on the bottom or fell off a table, I'm concerned that the cover may twist and pop off. Not a big deal, but just a minor observation.

I was very wary of buying an LED camping lantern. When I recieved it in the mail I was very happy with the rugged sturdy design, bright light output, and the ability to hang it from the ceiling of my tent as well as other places. Definitely recommend this very affordable lantern to any camping lover.

I purchased this light mainly use for the base camp and auto camp.
Compare to other same price range ramps, this was the best for my usage for the following reasons.
Price wise, there are 30day survival lantern uses same brand LED bulb which made by Nichia. This one has 3 bulbs other one has 2, but they produce same amount of lumen. However, other brands cost $10 more than this light.
Uses only 3 x D batteries only, while other similar lantern uses 4 x D batteries. which means lighter!
After I used this lantern at fully shaded camping site. this is bright enough to cover larger camping site.
The top reflector can be remove and has hook on the back (also comes with additional hook for different size usage) so either I can use it for outdoor and uncover the reflector hook under the tent.
