This review is from: Nicholas Le Floch Affair (Nicolas Le Floch Investigation) (Paperback)
Jean-Francois Parot brings pre-Revolutionary France to life in ways that reek (often almost literally) of authenticity. The period detail is fascinating, but lightly worn, never wearying the reader. Parot is particularly good on the palace protocols and political intrigues of the Bourbons, writing sympathetically and very movingly about this doomed dynasty, especially as he lays bare the ugly reality behind the call "the king is dead, long live the king". The Nicolas le Floch Affair (set in 1774 and the fourth in the series) is much more than a compelling if complex murder mystery. It is also an epicurean discourse on the finer side of eighteenth century life and an entertaining read. We know where this is all headed of course, but it will be fascinating to watch Commissioner le Floch as he draws ever closer to the "dies irae" of 1789.
